IRISH DERBY DAY: SHAMROCK previews the Dubai Duty Free Irish Derby – the 5.20pm at The Curragh.

An intriguing Dubai Duty Free Irish Derby at The Curragh this afternoon which has an open look to it, despite the presence of Epsom Derby winner Anthony Van Dyck.

The English Derby form has worked out much better than it looked at time but the headache for punters is that if you fancy Anthony Van Dyck to follow up then, by definition, you also have to be very worried about Madhmoon who was only half a length behind the Aidan O’Brien trained winner.

Add to the mix Broome (only beaten 3/4 length in fourth) and you can make a big case for Anthony Van Dyck being too short in the market at around even money.

To add to the Rubik’s Cube, there were excuses for all three at Epsom. Anthony Van Dyck didn’t get the clearest of runs, Madhmoon clipped heels and stumbled 4f out and Broome was restless in the stalls.

The course switch may suit Broome best. The front pair were still doing their best work late on, whereas Broome tired just before the finish. Although the same trip here, The Curragh is a far easier test than Epsom without the helter-skelter undulations and might suit a 10 furlong horse much better.

It’s tough one – but when you find it hard to split three horses I don’t want to be betting at 2.3 on the more fancied one.
