5/4 WINNING NAP: After two NAPS that were non runners we finally had a runner and a winning nap on Friday – Un De Sceaux (NAP) WON 5/4. There was a return in 4 of the 8 races so a small profit. Get SHAMROCK’s final day preview and selections for ALL EIGHT RACES.
Finally a nap that runs – and wins !!
Un De Sceaux landed SHAMROCK’s NAP on Friday winning at 5/4.
I also had two other winners on the card, and a place return with Spring Heeled who, although 4th of 14, qualified for a place as the original place terms stand on BETDAQ irrelevant of non runners.
It’s been a mixed meeting so far – I still need to try and land a big winner and I’ll do my best to finish the five days off in style today.
For the record, here is yesterday’s scorecard.
3.40 Enniskillen (WIN and PLACE LAY to cover win stake) 3rd
4.20 Spring Heeled (WIN and PLACE) 4th
4.55 Panther Claw (WIN) lost
5.30 So Young (PLACE) lost
6.05 Un Atout (WIN) WON 4/6
6.40 Un De Sceaux (NAP) (WIN) WON 5/4
7.10 Robina Mai (WIN) lost
7.45 Salsify (WIN) WON 5/4
Eight races today, starting at 2.30:
2:30 Irish Field Chase (5yo+, 3m, 15 runners)
Last year’s winner Outlaw Pete is back for more but comes here on the back of a fall on Thursday in the La Touche Cup when he was still travelling OK before coming down seven out.
Seven out, in a 4m 1f chase, still means he had a serious long distance race in heavy ground and I’d want to be taking him on so quickly after that run.
The lay price on the win market is a bit too big for my liking but he’s odds-on for a place in early BETDAQ trading and I want to be taking him on at those kind of odds.
In any event, Shakervilz holds Outlaw Pete on the form of the cross country chase at the Cheltenham Festival and he has 10 lengths to make up today on the same weight terms.
SELECTION: Outlaw Pete (PLACE LAY)
3:10 Madra Irish Dog Foods Novice Chase (5yo+, 2m 2f, 7 runners)
I’ve got my laying shoes on today as I want to be against Aupcharlie here. Ruby Walsh prefers stablemate Mikael D’Haguenet, as do I. Aupcharlie was bitterly disappointing in the Jewson and prior to that was beaten at odds of 1/2 at Naas.
The issues with Mikael D’Haguenet are with his flawed jumping so we may need one of the bigger price runners Dylan Ross, Grey Gold or Toner D’Oudairies to come to our rescue.
SELECTION: Aupcharlie (LAY)
3:45 Three Pat Taaffe Handicap Chase (0-150) (Grade B) (5yo+, 3m 1f, 14 runners)
On His Own (pictured) broke the hearts of many punters in the Grand National when falling at Valentines on the second circuit but was struggling at the time. It was his second consecutive fall in the race.
The top weight adds some class to the race but the stats tell us that eight of the last 10 winners carried below 11st.
Perhaps the winner is lurking towards the bottom of the racecard? Sword Fish is interesting after his good Fairyhouse win but is penalised 9lb and is also 4lb out of the handicap and that combination surely will anchor him.
MY MURPHY is a relatively unexposed novice who tipped up in the race won by Panther Claw at Navan but was still going well. There is a distinct possibility we have still to see the best of him over fences and novices have a good record in the race.
SELECTION: My Murphy (WIN)
4:25 Irish Thoroughbred Breeders Association Fillies Scheme E.B.F. Mares Hurdle (Grade 1) (4yo+, Class 1, 2m 2f, 5 runners)
GLENS MELODY would have been unbeaten this year but for meeting star-of-the-future stablemate Annie Power at Fairyhouse.
Now she meets another rising-star stablemate, Tarla, who is six in a row still standing, but has PU and FF blotting her copybook.
But she did everything right at Cork on the last day, jumping well, and the race has the makings of another Mullins 1-2.
We get better odds the place (1,2) on Glens Melody as we do about Tarla for the win and Glens Melody will be no pushover for her stable companion so that would be the bet for me.
SELECTION: Glens Melody (PLACE)
5:00 AES Champion Four Year Old Hurdle (Grade 1) (4yo, Class 1, 2m, 6 runners)
For Mullins 1-2, read Mullins 1-2-3-4. What can stop him but the fillies’ allowance to Jessica Harrington’s One Fine Day.
She beat Djakadam at Fairyhouse, with Dogora third, but the revised weights now have them locked together.
However, on official ratings, the winner would be yet another Mullins contender, DIAKALI, who found Our Conor too good at Leopardstown and then
again at the Cheltenham Festival. There’s no Our Conor today.
SELECTION: Diakali (NAP) (WIN)
5:35 Setanta Sports Handicap Hurdle (Grade B) (4yo+, 2m 4f, 25 runners)
The bottom five in the handicap contained the winner in nine of the last 10 years, would you believe.
Willie Mullins sneaked four of those winners in from below the 10st 8lb belt, and has two sub-11st runners here which could land the sucker punch.
The improver is J P McManus’s BYERLEY BABE, who didn’t win her maiden until March but afterwards ploughed through the mud at Cork to beat two
previous course winners.
SELECTION: Byerley Babe (WIN and PLACE)
6:10 Peggy Barry-Walsh Memorial (Pro/Am) Flat Race (4-7yo, 2m, 19 runners)
The races get harder as the meeting goes on today !
I think a debutant winning is more likely here – current favourite Martello Tower won a PTP on debut.
But there’s a whole stack of interesting newcomers. JERUSALEM BELLS is one of them, representing shrewd connections and with the excellent Jane Mangan (right) onboard.
SELECTION: Jerusalem Bells (WIN and PLACE)
6:40 Diageo Ireland Punchestown Charity Race (4yo+, 1m 7f, 28 runners)
The curtain comes down on Punchestown 2013 with the charity race.
Totally impossible from a punting point of view but COLLINGWOOD win and place, is a token selection.
SELECTION: Collingwood (WIN and PLACE)
