NAVAN NAP: SHAMROCK heads to Navan on Sunday for the card that features the Vintage Crop Stakes at 4.20pm.

An eight race card at Navan on Sunday which features the Vintage Crop Stakes at 4.20pm.

It’s pretty hard to look beyond Aidan O’Brien’s (only) runner in the race Santiago – winner of last year’s Irish Derby and stepped up again in trip to take a creditable third in the Goodwood Cup and fourth in the St Leger.

He doesn’t look a bet at odds-on for me though as there a few that don’t need to find much on the figures if Santiago is a little ring rusty after his 225 day break.

Stratum won well at Gowran earlier this month and will be match fit whereas Baron Samedi, trained by Joseph O’Brien, bids for a six-timer having stepped up to win a Group 3 at Longchamp in October. The ground has to be a concern for him though with the bulk of his wins coming with give in the ground.

For the NAP I’ll play on the Aidan O’Brien trained Willow in the Listed Salsabil Stakes at 3.50pm. She improved with each run last season culminating in a comfortable win at Leopardstown. She has entries for all the top races.
