PUNCHESTOWN DAY THREE: It’s day three of the Punchestown Festival and SHAMROCK again has a look at all the races on the card. Eight races today on good to yielding ground.

My thoughts on all eight races today:

3:40 Murray Spelman Handicap Hurdle (88-123) (4yo+, 2m, 27 runners)

The Mag Mullins trained Pepparpot is a speculative suggestion for the trappy opener. Although we haven’t seen the six-year-old over hurdles since 2013 he is fit from a recent flat campaign and could easily be ahead of the handicap. Early market signs are quite positive too.

4:15 Three.ie Handicap Chase (Grade C) (4yo+, 2m, 16 runners)

Struggled to find any angles in to this – apart from thinking the race could easily produce a shock result. No bet.

4:50 FBD Cross Country Chase For The La Touche Cup (5yo+, 4m, 14 runners)

Sticking with the cross-country standing order of Enda Bolger and Nina Carberry here. Quantitativeeasing was fourth in this last year but looked desperately unlucky in the Glenfarclas Handicap Chase at the Cheltenham Festival when carried out and compensation awaits.

5:30 Ladbrokes World Series Hurdle (Grade 1) (4yo+, Class 1, 3m, 11 runners)

I’m sorry to desert him but I’m in the school of thought that thinks Hurricane Fly is FAR too short in the market for his first try over this longer trip. The Fly is ahead of Jezki so far this season but there are plenty of horses proven over this trip that could cause problems to them both and I am laying Hurricane Fly today.

6:05 Donohue Marquees Handicap Hurdle (4yo+, 3m, 26 runners)

Mine Now ran a good race at Fairyhouse when fourth to I Shot The Sheriff and can get back in the places today. It’s a new trip for him today but all the evidence suggests that it will suit.

6:40 Ryanair Novice Chase (Grade 1) (5yo+, Class 1, 2m, 6 runners)

DAQMAN said three words about this race and I can’t add much more than… Un De Sceaux. He is unopposable after his Racing Post Arkle Challenge Trophy Chase win at the Festival but the odds tell you that. Settle back and watch a truly exceptional horse in action.

7:15 Orchid Transport Mares Novice Hurdle (4yo+, 2m, 11 runners)

Willie Mullins more than likely holds the key but I am struggling to sort out his three runners let alone the rest of the field and it’s another no play race for me.

7:45 Kildare Post Flat Race (4-7yo, 2m, 8 runners)

The Nicky Henderson trained unbeaten pair Newsworthy and OK Corral make this interesting but it’s hard to look past Yorkhill who impressed on debut at Gowran Park.

SHAMROCK’S BETS:
3.40 Pepparpot (WIN and PLACE)
4.15 NO BET
4.50 Quantitativeeasing (NAP)
5.30 Hurricane Fly (LAY)
6.05 Mine Now (WIN and PLACE)
6.40 Un De Sceaux
7.15 NO BET
7.45 Yorkhill (NEXT BEST)
