THYESTES DAY AT GOWRAN: SHAMROCK looks ahead to the two big races – the Goffs Thyestes Handicap Chase and the John Mulhern Galmoy Hurdle. He bids to land his third winning nap from the last four.
A big day at Gowran Park today – in the Galmoy Hurdle Bacardys is a now a non runner but Willie Mullins still has a strong hand with Let’s Dance and Augusta Kate.
Let’s Dance was an easy winner in Grade 3 company last time out but supporters are taking educated guesses on two factors. (1) her ability to see out this three mile trip (2) this will be the most testing ground she has faced for a long time so the stamina question is accentuated.
Alpha Des Obeaux won this two years ago but this looks a much stronger renewal and he hasn’t shown too much sparkle in his last two races.
Presenting Percy returns to hurdling after two wins from four starts over fences and could be the one to beat. Stamina is his middle name having won a very tough 3m5f handicap over fences at Fairyhouse last month.
In the Thyestes I share DAQMAN’s view that Out Sam is now very short in the market for what he has achieved. Sure, he has man of the moment James Bowen onboard but if you are not on at the more fancy prices I struggle to see how you can get involved now.
I’ll take a chance with his stable companion Ucello Conti who was runner-up in this last year and ran a huge race in Leopardstown over Christmas.
