CONEYGREE MISSES HENNESSY: Gold Cup winner Coneygree has this morning been ruled out of Saturday’s Hennessy. There are four Irish raiders of which Valseur Lido looks the pick.

Saturday’s big race, the Hennessy Gold Cup at Newbury has taken a dramatic twist this morning with the news that the ante-post favourite and Gold Cup winner Coneygree will miss the race after he schooled badly this morning. The King George or the Lexus will be the next target for him over Christmas.

Four Irish trained runners are amongst the now 20 strong five-day field for the race and it looks as though Willie Mullins has his best chance with Valseur Lido who looks the pick of his three runners. It hasn’t been a great race for Irish raiders – Mullins himself supplied the last winner with Be My Royal in 2002.

Valseur Lido is a smart chaser who finished third to Vautour in the JLT at the Festival and finished off last season by winning a Grade 1 novice chase at Punchestown.

The softer the better for him so any further rain will boost his chance further. I’ll take another look at the race on Saturday.

Irish racing resumes at Dundalk tomorrow.
