SHAMROCK AT WEXFORD: On a day of short price favourites SHAMROCK naps in the competitive mares hurdle at 2.15.

I was leaning towards napping the Willie Mullins trained Aminabad in the opener at Wexford this afternoon in the hope of getting around even money but circumstances have changed and the withdrawal of Fact File has left the favourite trading around 1.48 on BETDAQ which looks a little skinny for a horse making his hurdling debut after a lengthy absence.

There are quite a few short price favourites on the card, notably Measureofmydreams in the maiden hurdle at 1.15 who again represents Mullins and Walsh.

The mares hurdle at 2.15 has attracted a field of just five but it still looks competitive with only Lady Warrior (well beaten in all starts) safe to rule out.

I like the look of Cloudy Rock from Sean O’Brien’s yard. She is held by Mrs Mac Veale on Thurles form from two weeks ago but the step back to two miles might allow her to reverse the form.

Mrs Mac Veale reverts to hurdles having unseated her rider at the first over fences last week.

Solita looks the biggest danger. She is still improving and on top form.

This could be final time that races are run right-handed at Wexford Racecourse as their board are investigating the possibility of changing the direction of the track. This is the first time that this type of drastic change to a course has been looked but those who run the track have cited that the course could be made safer by going left-handed.

Schooling races going left-handed have already been run at the track with some positive feedback from Trainers and Jockeys with leading rider, Brian O’Connell commenting: Brian O’Connell who trialled the course on Wednesday said this evening: “I rode a horse on the flat there and one over fences. I thought it rode it well and it would certainly be worth having a trial race day there anyway.

“Going from yesterday you would be more than happy to go left-handed. My father (clerk of the course Val O’Connell) thinks it might work.

“Davy Russell, Jonathan Burke, Sean Flanagan, Colm Murphy, Mikey Fogarty and Jamie Codd were among the jockeys and trainers there.

”Personally I would think it would ride a better track going left-handed.”
