SHAMROCK’S THOUGHTS ARE AT YORK AND KILLARNEY TODAY: His nap of the day runs in the Vincent O’Brien Ruby Stakes at Killarney.

There are reasons for taking on Australia today as he takes on older opposition for the first time:

(1) He’s dropping back in trip after his dual Epsom/Curragh Derby wins.
(2) He’s been off the track for 53 days.
(3) 8-12 is a far from ideal riding weight for Joseph O’Brien – and certainly can’t be his strongest riding weight.
(4) Stable whispers from O’Brien that the horse may well return ‘heavier than ideal’ after his break.

None of these factors are necessarily showstoppers but do instil caution for those wanting to plough in at around 1.7 on BETDAQ.

My premise with odds on shots is that you really need ticks in all the boxes, and I’m really not convinced that they are with Australia. Part of me thinks he is a very good horse who can sweep the concerns above away and in receipt of the weight for age allowance justify his odds-on status – but at 1.7 I’m not willing to pay to find out. It’s a no bet race for me but I wish him well.

At Killarney tonight the feature race is the Vincent O’Brien Ruby Stakes at 6.40. I’ve been looking forward to the reappearance of Brooch after her debut romp at Galway when winning a maiden by an eased down nine and a half lengths!

This is obviously tougher but the Dermot Weld trained filly looks mighty hard to oppose.
