Novak Djokovic (1.07) vs. Tomas Berdych (10.5)
Berdych has played some good tennis this year and he was positively dominant in Saturday’s semifinal win over Gael Monfils, dispatching the Frenchman 6-1, 6-4 in just 67 minutes. He took a set off Djokovic the last time these two met, in Dubai a couple of months ago, and his last victory over the Djoker came on clay at the Rome Masters. So…is he a good value at better than 9/1 on your money?
Uhhh… no. I don’t believe he is. Djokovic is the best player in the world at the moment, and it isn’t all that close. Yesterday he humbled clay court master Rafa Nadal 6-3, 6-3, proving that he’s a different player on clay than he was just two or three years ago. He’s 18-2 in 20 career matches against Berdych, with 5 of the last six wins coming in straight sets. I realize the odds are uncomfortably short, but a bet on the world’s best player is the only way to go here. Recommendation: Djokovic at 1.07, Djokovic 2-0 (sets) at 1.31

Teliana Pereira (1.85) vs. Yaroslava Shvedova (1.97)
Pereira has been on quite a roll, winning the Bogota tournament last week and cruising through four rounds this week without dropping a set. However, she’s running into a physically stronger player in Shvedova, a 27-year old with a big serve who has plenty of high-level experience (more than Pereira, anyway).
This match is on clay of course, which is why Pereira, the clay court specialist, is favored. This is new territory for Pereira, though– a WTA final is a swim in the deep end for the Brazilian, and it’s anybody’s guess whether she’ll be able to handle it. As the less-powerful, less-experienced player, she’s got some obvious things working against her, and I’m just not sure I’m willing to throw any money in her direction. I think I’ll take my chances with the better player at longer odds. Recommendation: Shvedova at 1.97, Shvedova 2-1 (sets) at 4.5
