We welcome back THE BETDAQ PUNTER this week.

He looks back on a profitable punting week on BETDAQ on a day-by-day basis – this is followed by his bets of the week….

This week he is recommending bets on the football and racing.

Friday

A week is a long time in politics or so they say – well they should try the up and down world of a would be punter, then you really know the meaning of trial and tribulation as horses, dogs and football teams let you down at will – or so it seems some days anyway! This afternoon I centred my punting around the Newbury racing card as I am (still) convinced the form holds up better at the higher quality tracks – though I have no evidence to back that up. I am a massive fan of Nicky Henderson but sometimes his horses are just too short in comparison to their on course achievements, and in this case the horse concerned was Glorious Twelfth. At 2.2 on BETDAQ I did seriously consider laying him after all the talk about washed out gallops and an absence of over six months, but in the end I backed the in form and race fit Dancingtilmidnight instead. After landing my bets pretty comfortably at odds of 3.4 on BETDAQ (9/4 SP), I realised I didn’t really know who trainer Harry Fry was? A quick Google search later I discovered he was assistant to Paul Nicholls before going it alone, so no great surprise he has started off so well having been trained by the master, and I will be backing his horses a bit more often from now on.

Saturday

I am sure that some of my comments upset a few readers now and then but at the moment, I have to say that I HATE West Bromwich Albion! Nothing against Steve Clarke or any of the players but they let me down for a tasty 30/1 plus four timer which would have made my weekend a whole lot happier, and added a few extra pressies under the tree. I tried to not be too greedy with a zillion-fold accumulator and felt I had been pretty smart but one team let me down, and I was not a happy bunny. I did have my biggest bet of the week on Watford at 1.9 on BETDAQ which never really looked in any danger so it wasn’t all bad, while my sole bet on the horses was on Countrywide Flame who could not have won any easier – 3.9 on the day wasn’t as good as I hoped for, but then the BETDAQ layers aren’t as generous as I wanted I suppose?

Sunday

Always a quiet day for me as the family are inclined to get the hump if I spend the Sabbath with my nose in a form book but football on the TV seems to be just about acceptable so Norwich v Sunderland was the only call. Not too exciting in my book and only on in the background, but a cheeky bet on the home team at BETDAQ odds of 2.1 seemed the first thing to do, followed by an under 2.5 goals bet at odds of 1.99 – after all, neither are exactly free scorers at the moment. One out of two saw a small profit (2-1 final score), and more than enough time to slope off for a roast dinner.

Monday

I missed a banana skin by deciding not to bet on the Newcastle Wigan match (I have a soft spot for Wigan so would have got that badly wrong), but lost slightly on the horses if only thorough my own greed, which is a bit of a recurring theme. Too many bets must have been my downfall after Pendra (1.5), Sillabub (2.35) and Kings Palace (3.4) all won for me via BETDAQ of course, but with losers such as Hawkes Point (second 2.5) and Saved By The Bell (second 2.8) and some dodgy staking by myself, I ended up slightly out of pocket.

Tuesday

Money talks was the order of the day with well supported animals either debuting under rules or returning from long absences and like a lemming, I simply followed them in. Billybo was backed as if defeat was not an option despite over two and a half years off the track and duly landed the odds of 1.8 that I took (returned shorter) by thirty plus lengths. Next up was Minella For Steak who cost £230,000 at the sales after winning a point to point and he won well enough at 2.6 on BETDAQ to keep the ball rolling, followed by Rouge Et Blanc returning after over a year off and with form figures of P4FPPP before being backed to 4.5 favourite on BETDAQ, and winning by a very easy seven lengths. Happy days indeed and a big boost to the BETDAQ bank, but we all know, every good day is invariably followed by two bad ones!

Wednesday

I do not get involved in Champions League football when it is at this stage and second teams are sometimes on view, which left me with the racing and perhaps a bit of snooker. Those old enough may remember Tony Drago, a top snooker player with a more cavalier attitude than most of his contemporaries, and I found an interview on line during tea break where he was full of praise for young Belgian Luca Brecel, who was playing Ryan Day in the afternoon. Tony seems to think he can go as far as he wants to in the game which is pretty high praise, and at odds of 2.4 on BETDAQ how could I resist a little bet on a sport I rarely speculate on. What felt like years later (it isn’t that exciting to watch, and even worse on a smart phone when you can’t see the balls!), the bet was landed, though thanks to a silly punt at a too tempting 3.1 on BETDAQ on Salden Licht over the jumps at Hereford, all profits were soon wiped out and then some.

Thursday

Even I need a day off sometimes and today was a real tempter. Leicester and Market Rasen abandoned after frost, Europa League football that I don’t care about, snooker that I don’t understand, and cricket that looks too obvious, so where do I risk my pennies? My answer was to have another go at following the money, so small bets on Calmer Waters (4.4 on BETDAQ was 13.0+), Lokis Strike (4.2 on BETDAQ, was 7.5+) and Global Warming (4.7 on BETDAQ was 6.5+), will be the limit of my speculation. My first runner came nowhere (well, fifth so might as well have been last), Loki’s Strike ended up being sent off favourite but only managed seventh, and Global Warming was fourth at 5/2 – I won’t be doing that again in a hurry, though I suspect I lost a lot less than those who shortened the prices in the first place!

Conclusions:

Bet of the week – Watford at 1.9 may not have been the best price but they won easily enough and landed my biggest bet all week.

Disaster of the week
– West Bromwich Albion – sure to win this weekend now I am blanking them, but the only loser in a nice little accumulator, and the reason why I failed to add another 30 points to the BETDAQ betting bank.

THIS WEEKEND…..

I am determined to get an accumulator up soon with so many near misses of late, but only time will tell if this is the one. Being a naturally greedy sort, I think two win trebles are in order, one with the more likely winners that should cover our costs if it comes off, and one on the riskier options that could buy a bigger turkey. Chelsea are still a work in progress (and always will be if they keep changing managers), but really ought to be far too good at BETDAQ odds of 2.0 against Sunderland who are really struggling, and possibly a bet for relegation. In League One, Swindon will need to beat the likes of Doncaster if they want to have serious ambitions of going up a division, and I am pretty sure they can do just that at odds of 1.9, while Swansea are finally clicking under their new management structure and ought to stop the mini revival of Norwich at the same odds (1.9) on BETDAQ – for a 7.22 treble.

For the outsiders bet, I can see West Ham beating Liverpool (3.2 on BETDAQ), Newcastle winning at Fulham (BETDAQ price 4.3), and my old friends at Watford (2.5 on BETDAQ) seeing off Hull with the minimum of fuss, and I intend to back them in a single at that price as well as in the 34.4 treble.

Cricket is beyond redemption by now so no point in having a bet there, club rugby is beyond me unless I hear something (and I haven’t), and although I may have a few individual match bets on the darts once the World Championships are under way, nothing stands out as ante post value. That leads me back to my old friends the horses and after a 100% success rate last week, can we double up this weekend (if Jack Frost doesn’t ruin my plans, that is)? Sprinter Sacre v Sanctuaire is the big match up at Sandown but a watching brief seems sensible and if I have a bet, it will be on Staffhoss to small stakes in the 12.05pm at Lingfield. I managed to get hold of a copy of the Mark Johnstone stable’s magazine and it appears this horse was a bonus for the staff (hence the name), and is thought capable of winning a little race. He ran on through beaten horses first time out but his trainer feels he was just getting the hang of things and although no good thing, he could be worth a point if nothing else?

This week’s suggested bets (all prices with BETDAQ and correct at the time of writing):

Weekend Football
1pt Win treble – Chelsea (2.0), Swindon (1.9) and Swansea (1.9) – 7.22 treble.
1pt win treble – West Ham (3.2), Newcastle (4.3), and Watford (2.5) – 34.4 treble.
3pts Win Watford (2.5)

Horse racing Saturday
1pt Win Staffhoss 12.05pm Lingfield Saturday
