THE EDGE: Our cricket tipster The Edge previews Thursday’s Big Bash clash between Sydney Sixers v Brisbane Heat with a recommended BETDAQ bet.

MATCH OVERVIEW:

We’re down to the final three in the Big Bash 2022/23 season, and Sydney Sixers face off with Brisbane Heat on BETDAQ Betting Exchange on Thursday with a place in the Final waiting against the Perth Scorchers. As I said at the start of the playoffs, it was always likely we’d see a Final between Sydney Sixers and Perth Scorchers because they have looked by far the top two teams in the tournament. The Sixers are well fancied to progress here as they trade 1.61 at the time of writing.

Brisbane Heat will be delighted with their season – they finished second last equal on points with Melbourne Renegades at the bottom of the table in 2021/22. Brisbane Heat have come through two do-or-die games already, and maybe they were a little lucky with the rain against Sydney Thunder but they chased down the 162/5 from Melbourne Renegades quite easily! I have to say, it’s really poor that both sides are losing big Aussie stars at this point of the tournament.

Brisbane Heat are missing their captain Usman Khawaja, Marnus Labuschange and Marr Renshaw. While Sydney Sixers will be without Steven Smith who scored two brilliant centuries recently too. The Australian Test side had to leave for their tour of India, and you have to say it’s poor planning from Cricket Australia – this is their premier T20 tournament and the sides are without their top batsmen. It’s a huge loss for Brisbane Heat because they looked a different side with their Aussie Test stars – winning six of their last seven after they came into the side. You’d have to say that gives the Sixers a big edge here.

WEATHER AND PITCH WATCH:

The Sixers have home advantage so we’re back at the SCG. Scoring has come down here in recent years, although we did see a huge win for the Sixers in the Sydney Derby here. The first inning scores this season have been; 137/6 (won), 150/5 (chased), 149/8 (won), 151/5 (won) and 187/2 (won). Sydney Thunder only managed 62 all out chasing that 187/2, which wasn’t even their lowest score of the season might I add! I would definitely bat first here – the scores support it and in a high pressure game runs on the board always suits here.

RECOMMENDED BET:

The Aussie Test squad leaving for India has basically taken an axe to the Brisbane side, especially in the batting department and I’m not sure how they fill that gap. You can ask how Sydney Sixers replace a batsmen like Steven Smith, especially with the form he was in, but it’s easier to replace one big player compared to three, and I can easily see Brisbane coming up short. Scoring hasn’t been easy at the SCG and the Sixers bowling has been solid throughout the tournament too – without the Aussie Test players I can only see one winner here and that’s the Sixers. The 1.61 is a Max Bet for me.

IN-RUNNING STRATEGY:

I would definitely want to be against the Brisbane Heat batting here whenever they bat. In an ideal world, they would be chasing 150/160 and that might be the sweet spot to take them on. If they batted first, I would still be happy to take them on but I wouldn’t stay in the market for too long – I do feel there’s an edge batting first here given conditions. This could easily be a game for the bowlers given the star batters missing and the batting conditions at the SCG.
