BIG BASH: Our cricket tipster The Edge previews Sunday’s Big Bash game between Melbourne Stars v Melbourne Renegades with a recommended BETDAQ bet.

MATCH OVERVIEW:

It’s a Melbourne Derby in the Big Bash on Sunday morning as the Melbourne Stars host the Melbourne Renegades at the MCG. We haven’t seen much cricket in Melbourne during the Big Bash season as they had a total lockdown with Covid19 and then hosted International cricket as India played Australia. The Stars got off to a very impressive start here on Friday though, beating the Adelaide Strikers by 111 runs!

The Renegades have been the worst team in the tournament. They are detached at the end of the table with no Playoff prospects. The Stars are right in the mix however so this is a much bigger game for them as we approach the final stages of the group stage. There’s a host of teams in the mix, indeed there’s only four points between second and seventh. With the Renegades being so poor this season, it’s vital the Stars win here given the likely challengers ahead for the Playoff places.

The Stars are in a good place coming into this game, with Andre Fletcher hitting form just at the right time. He has credited his improve to a phone call from Brian Lara – he can only hope he’s as consistent as Lara towards the end of the tournament! The Stars won the group stage last season but they have always failed in the Playoffs. Perhaps this season can be different if they have to battle to reach the Playoffs.

WEATHER AND PITCH WATCH:

With the MCG being such a big playing area, a lot depends on where the pitch is placed and how far out the boundaries are. Do check that at the toss. The average score batting first here last season was 167 but we did have a good mix of scores. We saw 291/1 and 194/2 but then also had four scores in the 140 to 145 range. Chasing was hard here last season too – indeed after Friday the team batting first has won the last six Big Bash games here. The Stars scored 179/2 while the Adelaide Strikers were bowled out for 68 in the chase.

RECOMMENDED BET:

The Renegades have been so poor this season it’s very difficult to back them. It simply has to be the Stars for me, and the 1.66 is worth a small bet. They have had issues at the top of the order but if Fletcher and Stoinis finish the tournament in good form they will be very hard to beat with Maxwell finishing off the innings too. Batting has been a major issue for the Renegades, with Marsh and Finch unable to perform well enough to carry the rest. They have conceded some massive totals too though so it’s not just the batting.

The Edge Says:
One point win Melbourne Stars to beat Melbourne Renegades at 1.66 with BETDAQ Betting Exchange

IN-RUNNING STRATEGY:

Melbourne Derbies are always interesting games so we should have a decent game for trading on BETDAQ Betting Exchange, despite the Renegades being very poor this season. I can see a very big total if the Stars bat first given the openers have found form, Maxwell is in good touch too and with Renegades bowling conceding a lot of runs it could be carnage. I wouldn’t rule out 200+ and I’ll be getting on the Stars if they bat first.

In terms of players, Marsh and Finch are worth the big ticks for the Renegades and I would be happy to be against them again. They haven’t performed this tournament, but it is hard when you have to carry the whole team almost. Most of the trading angles should favour the Stars here, as the Renegades can seemingly throw away a good position from anywhere!
