IPL: Our cricket tipster The Edge previews Sunday’s double header in the IPL with the games between Delhi Capitals v Mumbai Indians and Punjab Kings v Royal Challengers Bangalore both with a recommended BETDAQ bet.

Delhi Capitals v Mumbai Indians

MATCH OVERVIEW:

We have a first big double header of the IPL 2022 on Sunday as Delhi Capitals play Mumbai Indians and then later we have Punjab Kings v Royal Challengers Bangalore. We should have a fantastic day ahead on BETDAQ Betting Exchange with plenty of trading opportunities. We start in Brabourne in Mumbai as the Delhi Capitals host Mumbai Indians. These two have been two of the top sides in the IPL in recent years, and this is a brilliant way to start the day. Mumbai had a very poor time of things in the UAE last year after actually lifting the title there the year before, and they’ll be hoping to put that poor spell behind them.

Shane Watson has come in as assistant coach for the Delhi Capitals, and he should help their batting. They have been fantastic with the ball in recent years, and if they can improve their batting to the same level they will be right up there again this season. They have brought in David Warner at the top of the order, but they have lost Shikhar Dhawan. Mumbai Indians have tried to hold onto the same team for a number of years, but there has been more change than usual given we have an extra two teams this season. It’ll be very interesting to see how they start the tournament – they are historically slow starters, but I feel they can’t afford to start slow this year as it will be so competitive. This should be a cracker, and both teams will want to lay down a marker.

WEATHER AND PITCH WATCH:

This is obviously the first game of the tournament at the Brabourne Stadium, and I will be keeping a very open mind on conditions going into this game. This isn’t a ground that they have used often in the IPL, and we will get a better idea of conditions at this ground as the tournament goes along. With Covid19 we haven’t seen an IPL game here in years. Mumbai and Rajasthan were the “home” teams here but you have to go back to 2014 and 2015 for those games and the game has changed since so the average scores aren’t even important. It’s not a T20 International ground for India either, so it would be wise to have a very open mind here, let’s see what conditions we get.

RECOMMENDED BET:

I’m very interested to see what kind of performances we get from Mumbai here. After the changes this season, I definitely think that they are a weaker team heading into this IPL and they didn’t do well in the last IPL either. You’d still have to fancy them for the Playoffs given their history in this competition and they still have some star players, but Delhi are worth backing to get off to a winning start here at 2.0. It’s easy to see why we have a very close market here and there isn’t much between the sides at all, but I would have Delhi odds on rather than Mumbai. Given we don’t know much about the ground conditions, this is definitely a game for small stakes.

IN-RUNNING STRATEGY:

Without fully knowing what batting conditions are expected here, I’m happy to sit on my hands for a large part of this game in-running. This is going to be a very long tournament with ten teams now involved, and we’re going to have far better edges for in-running strategy throughout the tournament compared to guessing who might have an advantage batting or bowling first. It has to be noted that the South African players have picked the IPL over the South Africa v Bangladesh Test series, and that will give Delhi some nice bowling options. I’m a big fan of their bowling, and believe they can go very well here – but obviously we have to wait and see what batting conditions are like.

Punjab Kings v Royal Challengers Bangalore

MATCH OVERVIEW:

We stay in Mumbai next but we go to the Dr DY Patil Sports Academy as Punjab Kings take on Royal Challengers Bangalore. There’s been a huge amount of change at both teams after the auction this year, and I will be interested to see how Punjab perform. I have to say I don’t really like to look of their squad – they have brought in Jonny Bairstow, Shikhar Dhawan and Kagiso Rabada but apart from those big three they look a little little. They’ll be hoping Liam Livingstone fires with the bat and replaces someone like Chris Gayle, but their Indian selections look a little weak in my opinion.

It’s all change at the Royal Challengers Bangalore too, Virat Kohli has been replaced as captain by Faf du Plessis and they have also lost AB de Villiers with his retirement too. What can you say about AB de Villiers other than he will be impossible to replace – you just don’t replace talent like that. He got them out of some tricky positions over the years, and although he was out of match practice recently since retiring from International cricket he still had the talent to smash everyone in the IPL. Keeping Glenn Maxwell was a good decision obviously, but their bowling looks very light and I can see them struggling this season. This should going to be a very interesting game to be honest, because both sides look like they could have issues this season.

WEATHER AND PITCH WATCH:

This is a very similar situation to the game above, indeed there has been even less IPL cricket here and you have to go back so far it’s irrelevant. We saw IPL cricket here in 2008 and 2010, but cricket has changed immensely since then. It’s wise to go into this game with an open mind on conditions and just judge the pitch on what you see. The shrewd plan is to not go into the game with an pre-formed opinions because we just don’t know enough about conditions.

RECOMMENDED BET:

Once again we have a very close market here which is no surprise. There’s been a lot of change at both sides heading into this IPL, and I want to see both sides perform before having a strong opinion. RCB come into the game as the odds on favourites, and although there isn’t much in it I want to be on Punjab Kings here at the odds. I make this a real 50/50 game because both sides have big holes in their squads this season, but the 2.1 looks the small value play on Punjab Kings. Hopefully their batting can fire them home – once again that RB middle order looks very weak, and they will struggle this season in my opinion.

IN-RUNNING STRATEGY:

Very similar thoughts apply here as the first game. Without knowing what we can expect from batting conditions, it’s very hard to form a solid in-running strategy. I don’t know who is going to have a slight edge, the batting side or bowling side, and that’s not a good place to be pre-game. As we are staying in Mumbai for the whole tournament with a few games also from Pune, we’re going to get to know conditions much better here and can provide edges as the tournament goes on. From a team point of view, you always want to take on the RCB middle order and they are going to be even weaker this year without AB de Villiers. Hopefully we have an excellent double header ahead, but given it’s our first experience of IPL at these grounds for years and years it’s best to trade with a cagey mindset in-running today.
