WEST HAM V SHEFFIELD UNITED

6pm We have two interesting fixtures for Monday Night Football this week and we kick off with West Ham hosting Sheffield United. Both sides had different outcomes last week in the FA Cup with West Ham getting knocked out by Manchester United and Sheffield United advancing. I have to say the Cup has been fantastic for Sheffield United; they grinded out a poor win against very low quality opposition but it finally broke their losing run they have had notched up a few Premier League wins afterwards. They will still go down, but they didn’t deserve to have so little points. West Ham have been one of my favourite teams to back this season however; and I fancy them to get the job done again this evening.

It was disappointing that the Hammers could only draw 0-0 with Fulham the weekend before last, and they did concede an xG of 1.77. That is worrying, but over all their performances have been excellent this season. They are even in the mix for a European spot. Apart from the surprise 2-1 win over Manchester United at Old Trafford, Sheffield United’s wins have come against lower league opposition in the FA Cup and West Brom, who have been very poor this season too. I feel we’re getting great value on West Ham here at 1.75 given how good they have been this season. Sheffield United concede a lot of chances and this West Ham side have been excellent going forward. They aren’t quite a max bet, but it’s a confident bet to start the evening.

The Striker Says:
Three points win West Ham to beat Sheffield United at 1.75 on BETDAQ Betting Exchange

MATCH STATS

  • West Ham United are looking to complete a league double over Sheffield United in the top-flight for the first time since the 1967-68 season under Ron Greenwood.
  • Sheffield United have won one of their last 12 away games against West Ham in all competitions (D6 L5), a 2-0 win in the Championship in January 2005.
  • Coming into this weekend’s fixtures, only Manchester City (24) have won more Premier League points than West Ham so far in 2021 (16), with the Hammers winning five of their seven league games so far this calendar year (D1 L1).
  • After a 20-game winless run in the Premier League, Sheffield United have now won three of their last six in the competition. The Blades have alternated between victory and defeat in those six games, losing against Chelsea last time out.
  • Sheffield United have won just 7.7% of their Premier League games in London (P26 W2 D8 L16) – among teams to play more than 10 times in the capital, only Derby County (2.6%, P38 W1) have a lower win percentage than the Blades.
  • Excluding their loss at Newcastle on the opening day of the 2020-21 season, each of West Ham’s last 15 Premier League defeats have been against sides in the top half of the table. Since losing 1-2 at 12th place Crystal Palace in December 2019, the Hammers are unbeaten in their last 19 league games against sides in the bottom 10 (W11 D8).
  • West Ham have scored 12 goals from corners and indirect free-kick situations in the Premier League this season, more than any other side. Meanwhile, no side has conceded more goals from such situations than Sheffield United (10, level with Leeds).
  • West Ham already have as many points after 23 Premier League games this season as they had in the whole of 2019-20 (39). Indeed, the last time the Hammers had this many points at this stage of a top-flight campaign was in 1985-86 (45) when they ended up finishing third.
  • West Ham manager David Moyes has a 100%-win ratio in home games against Sheffield United in all competitions, winning all six of his previous games against the Blades. However, he hasn’t faced them at home since a 3-1 League Cup win for Everton in August 2011.
  • Since their return to the Premier League last season, Billy Sharp’s six league goals have been worth 10 points to the Blades. In their Premier League history, only Brian Deane’s goals have been more valuable to the Yorkshire side (11).

CHELSEA V NEWCASTLE

8pm Chelsea continued their winning run since sacking Frank Lampard last week with a 1-0 win over Barnsley in the FA Cup. It wasn’t all smooth sailing however, and you get the feeling they are still there for the taking against the top sides. I have to say, the jury is still out for me. They haven’t been fully tested since Lampard was sacked, and there xG figures aren’t eye-catching. They had a good win over Spurs; but they have been very poor lately and that fixture came at a good time for Chelsea. All that being said, they might not be tested again here. The market believes Chelsea will have an easy night, as they are trading as short as 1.27 on BETDAQ Betting Exchange.

Newcastle have pushed themselves away from the bottom three with two recent wins. While they should be safe again this season, they remain quite a poor side. We did land a nice bet on them to beat Southampton the weekend before last however as looking at their xG figures they are in excellent form. They didn’t actually perform as well as they did when losing to Crystal Palace as they did with that Southampton win but that’s football for you! I don’t see any upsets here, but I feel it’s worth having a small bet on Both Teams To Score at 2.2. Newcastle have been creating good chances for the last few weeks and they can get on the score sheet tonight.

One point win Both Teams To Score at 2.2 on BETDAQ Betting Exchange

MATCH STATS

  • Chelsea have only lost one of their 25 home Premier League games against Newcastle United (W18 D6), a 2-0 defeat in May 2012.
  • Newcastle have lost their last seven away league games against Chelsea, scoring just three goals and conceding 18.
  • Chelsea are looking to win eight consecutive home top-flight matches against an opponent for the first time since winning nine in a row against West Brom between 1984 and 2013.
  • Newcastle have won two away Premier League games in London this season, beating West Ham and Crystal Palace. The Magpies haven’t won three in a season in the capital since the 2013-14 campaign, beating Spurs, West Ham and Crystal Palace.
  • Chelsea have won their last three Premier League matches, as many as they had in their previous 11 (W3 D3 L5). The Blues have conceded just one goal in their four league games under Thomas Tuchel, while they’ve faced on average just five shots per game under the German, compared to 10.1 under Frank Lampard in the league this term.
  • Newcastle have won two of their last three Premier League games (L1), as many as they had in their previous 13 in the competition (D2 L9). The Magpies are looking to win consecutive away league games for the first time since July 2020.
  • Newcastle have lost 14 of their last 18 Premier League matches played on a Monday (W2 D2), failing to score in 13 of those matches, including each of the last four.
  • Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel has never previously managed a top-flight match on a Monday – his last match in any competition on this day was in August 2016, leading Borussia Dortmund to a 3-0 win in the first round of the DFB-Pokal against SV Eintracht Trier 05.
  • Only against Aston Villa (9) has Chelsea striker Olivier Giroud scored more Premier League goals than he has versus Newcastle (8). However, those eight goals against the Magpies all came in his first six appearances against them, with the Frenchman failing to score in his last seven.
  • Miguel Almirón has scored three goals in his last four Premier League games for Newcastle, as many as in his previous 32 in the competition. However, all four of his strikes this season have come in home games.
