STELLAR CARD AT NAVAN: SHAMROCK previews a superb Sunday card at Navan with the traditionally competitive Ladbrokes Troytown Handicap Chase the betting highlight of the day.

I suffered a naps reversal yesterday when Arctic Fire slipped up in the closing stages. It was too early to say what might of been but it was one of those events in racing that happens and can’t be forecast.

A great card to look forward to at Navan today:

1:25 ‘Monksfield’ Novice Hurdle (Grade 2) (4yo+, Class 1, 2m 4f, 8 runners) What a belter of a race. ALL eight runners won their previous starts and the market on BETDAQ is quite open. My preference is for Aidan O’Brien’s Carriganog who landed the odds in style at Wexford last time out, winning by 16 lengths and relishing the cut in the ground. As a four-year-old, he gets all the allowances here and is still very much on the upgrade. The Willie Mullins trained Alelchi Inois is bidding for a hat-trick and is rated the biggest danger.

2:25 Ladbrokes Troytown Handicap Chase (0-150) (Grade B) (4yo+, 3m, 20 runners) Despite the race always looking massively difficult to solve – each of the last six renewals has gone to a horse at 10/1 or less in the market. It’s a place bet for me this year on Raz De Maree who, on the betting, is the stable second string but could be interesting first time out. He hasn’t been seen since winning the Cork Grand National Handicap Chase last November and looks a sporting place chance (4 places) at around 6 on BETDAQ.

2:55 Proudstown Handicap Hurdle (Grade C) (4yo+, 2m 7f, 17 runners) It’s the place market again I head with Jennies Jewel who is remarkably consistent. She was only pipped a short head in a similar grade of race at Naas last time out and a repeat of that effort should again be good enough for a podium finish.

3:25 ITBA Fillies Scheme E.B.F. Mares Flat Race (Listed) (4-7yo, Class 1, 2m, 16 runners) It was hard not to be impressed by Princess Leya’s win at Cork where she bolted home by 18 lengths and looks of interest again now that she is stepped up in class.

SHAMROCK’S BETS:
NAP: Carriganog (1.25 Navan)
PLACE: Raz De Maree (2.25 Navan)
PLACE: Jennies Jewel (2.55 Navan)
WIN: Princess Leya (3.25 Navan)
