PLANNING NAPPED TO BE CHAMPION: It’s planning and No Planning today! Bishops Heir has been laid out for the Scottish Borders National at Kelso and was ‘big’ at 9.8 on BETDAQ this morning, while No Planning is napped to follow up his superlative Wetherby win in the Champion Chase.

STILL 8-1 TO DAQMAN IN VALUE HUNT: It was Black Saturday for the tipsters challenge (the score remains at Daqman 8, Pricewise 1), as 16-1, 14-1 and 12-1 (twice) shots took over at Aintree and Sandown yesterday, with just one outright favourite winning.

4-1 FOLLOW-UP SUCCESS AT CHEPSTOW: De La Bech (WON 4-1) was a winner from two runners for the Daqman horses-to-follow list at Chepstow, and remains one to follow, a progressive sort.

1.25 Kelso The last three winners have all come from the bottom five in the handicap, none since the race’s inception carrying above 11st 1lb.

Raven’s Tower – 6.6 on BETDAQ, as I write – looked confident and jumped well to win on his handicap debut at Plumpton, and Gunner Lindley (8.8), a winner on the Flat in Ireland recently, ran a fair race over hurdles at the Galway Festival.

1.55 Kelso (Scottish Borders National) As we saw with our Major Malarkey win this week, young horses find it difficult to cope with 4m, and there’s been no winner of this under the age of eight.

A keen-going front-runner up to 3m, Imperial Vic may have to change his ways to justify favouritism. Scotswell also likes to lead.

Soudain has had a wicked smack in the face from the handicapper, raised 16lb for a class-4 success in poor time – he would prefer it softer – while Royale Knight is struggling 13lb above his last winning mark.

Ros Castle is a mile and a half above his comfort zone. But Bishops Heir (9.8 on BETDAQ this morning) has looked as though he needs a marathon, and has been trained specifically for this race with a prep over hurdles.

The mare More Equity is on borrowed time. She suddenly found a new lease of life when heading for the paddocks and the stable is keeping her back from stud duties while the ground remains decent in the North.

Bescot Springs (12.0 on BETDAQ) was only just in front of her over 3m 2f on this course in October but this three-year-younger horse is ‘an improving sort’ from the yard of Lucinda Russell and Peter Scudamore, and today’s trip could be the making of him.

2.25 Kelso (Champion Chase) The race is now named after the 2011 winner, Always Right, whose stable runs Riskier, a 12.0 offer on BETDAQ this morning.

Riskier has been running over shorter in the last two years but used to campaign at this trip in his younger days and may have more stamina now, but he’s a risky bet.

Garleton (14.5) has crashed down the weights, 19lb lower than for his last win in May, if you include the claim. He must have good ground these days.

He was held –as was Rolecarr – by Kruzhlinin over course and distance a month back after that one had been well behind Rossini’s Dancer at Aintree, though that was over shorter than today.

Like Riskier, Rossini’s Dancer is returning to a longer trip here, and Sergeant Pink is also up in distance but, while his second on the Flat over 2m suggests he will relish it, 19.5 offers this morning were not being taken.

The favourite this morning, Night Alliance, is still at the right end of the handicap, though up 17lb since the start of this hat-trick bid five weeks ago.

No Planning (offers touching 5.0) missed one out at Ayr in May, otherwise has not been out of the frame in a sequence of 10 starts over hurdles and fences and jumped superbly at Wetherby. A Kayf Tara with plenty of stamina. He looks progressive.
