Costa Rica v England tonight – and a final chance for England to restore some pride after what has been a disastrous tournament whichever way you spin it.
They showed plenty of spirit in their opening game against Italy and it was looking very much like the dawn of ‘new’ England but ‘old’ England returned in their match against Uruguay and it means that, no matter what happens here, they will be on the plane home after the match.
At first glance England at odds-on raises our eyebrows, even against a Costa Rica side who have already qualified for the final 16 with two wins from two.
The odds are grossly insulting to Costa Rica and the only rational can be the expectation that the changes to the respective sides will over emphasise a weaker Costa Rica team.
England are expected to make nine changes including notably Wayne Rooney being side-lined leaving Daniel Sturridge as the lone striker. Ben Foster also replaces Joe Hart in goal.
Costa Rica were the original outsiders in Group D and have never faced England before. They still need a point to make certain of winning the Group and will want to maintain their momentum going into the next phase.
It’s a lay of England to compound the misery.
