GLORIOUS GALWAY: SHAMROCK came up trumps on Wednesday when he tipped up 14/1 GALWAY PLATE WINNER ROAD TO RICHES and also had well backed GREATNESS WON 4/1 amongst his winning bets.
Four winning bets from the eight races yesterday, the highlight most definitely being ROAD TO RICHES winning the Galway Plate, in a romp, at 14/1.
Shane Shortall worked the oracle for me yesterday – he was onboard my earlier winner Greatness but it was his front running ride on Road To Riches that really excelled. After the race he said: “That was brilliant, unbelievable! I got a dream spin off him the whole way around – after the third fence, I never saw another horse. He’s as genuine as you could meet, he was brilliant. There was nothing coming to edge him on but he still galloped all the way to the line for me.”
Anyway, as we all know the Galway Festival is most definitely a marathon meeting and not a sprint so more work to be done today on day four at Ballybrit and it’s another eight race card.
1:50 GuinnessPlus App Beginners Chase (5yo+, 2m 6f, 15 runners)
There was plenty of drama in the Plate yesterday with five non completers proving that these fences can still catch out runners in big competitive fields. The secret for the market principals here will be to keep out of trouble and the best way of that is usually to race prominently. The problem with this race is that it is difficult to see where the pace is going to come from as most of the market principals like to be held up. I don’t really dislike Our Man Zebo but I do dislike his price. He is around 2.5 on BETDAQ for his chasing debut and that really does look far too short and is a lay for me.
2:20 Guinness Harp Novice Chase (5yo+, 2m 1f, 6 runners)
Alelchi Inois has taken really well to chasing, winning both his starts well and should be able to land the odds and complete a hat-trick. The Willie Mullins trained runner was stepped up in trip to win last time but it’s no surprise to see him dropped back in distance for this as he was most impressive at Tramore when beating Steps To Freedom by 20 lengths on his chasing debut over two miles.
3:00 Guinness Time Handicap (60-90) (4yo+, 1m 100y, 16 runners)
Sretaw is going for the six-timer here. A six-timer of second places!! She keeps finding one too good including here at Galway on Tuesday over seven furlongs. It’s only a speculative play for me but I thought Laviniad looked of interest in the place market. The Willie Mullins trained filly continues to run well and her handicap mark keeps dropping!
3:40 Arthur Guinness E.B.F. Corrib Fillies Stakes (Fillies Listed) (3yo+, Class 1, 7f, 13 runners)
Tested has only been beaten once in four starts and looks set to follow-up Dermot Weld’s win in the race last year with Yellow Rosebud. Her only defeat came in the Irish 1000 Guineas at the Curragh when beaten a fair way in sixth behind Marvellous but she bounced back at Naas last time out to win a Listed contest over seven furlongs. It could easily be that seven furlongs is her optimum trip and she is taken to record another win here and hopefully land the nap.
4:15 Guinness Novice Hurdle (4yo+, 2m 4f, 10 runners)
Ice Reply comes here on the back of comfortable wins at Cork and Tipperary and the Dessie Hughes trained runner looks worthy of a place investment in a race full of potential. Ground Invasion and Pink Hat are obvious dangers.
4:55 Guinness Galway Hurdle Handicap (Grade A) (4yo+, 2m, 23 runners)
The big race on the card and it looks an absolute minefield for punters !! The good news is that you will be well rewarded if finding the winner. All bar two of the runners are in double figure odds on BETDAQ. John Ferguson sends over three raiders including Bordoni and facile Market Rasen winner Parlour Games but I am going to stay loyal with man of the moment Shane Shortall who is onboard Ferguson’s top weight Purple Bay who romped home last time out to win the Summer Hurdle at Market Rasen. He’s been hiked in the weights since then, so the 7lb claim from Shortall will come in very handy.
5:35 Guinness Surge Handicap (50-70) (3yo+, 1m 4f, 17 runners)
When in doubt…. turn to Dermot Weld. It’s pretty much the case here as I’ve no strong feelings but Weld’s Pirate Cove looks capable of a bit better and shaped well when chasing home Panama Hat at Leopardstown last time out.
6:05 Guinness Legacy Flat Race (5-7yo, 2m 2f, 17 runners)
A trappy finale and although Clondaw Farmer shaped well on debut at Fairyhouse he looks too tight in the market. A second lay bet of the day.
