GALWAY FESTIVAL DAY SIX: SHAMROCK pinpoints the best bets on day six of the Galway Festival this afternoon. The seven race card gets underway at 2.35.
There was a sudden and dramatic change in the ground yesterday at Galway. The going for day six is now described as yielding to soft after 8mm of rain overnight and further showers are forecast.
2:35 Ladbrokes Mobile Maiden Hurdle (4yo+, 2m, 14 runners)
This looks at the mercy of the Aidan O’Brien trained Marchese Marconi who is trading at around 1.47 on BETDAQ. He made no impression here in a two mile flat race on Monday but should be seen to better effect on only his second start over hurdles. He showed promise on his jumping debut at Punchestown when second to Fourni and can end Dermot Weld’s recent domination of this race. He’s won it for the last three seasons.
3:10 Ladbrokes Handicap Hurdle (Grade C) (4yo+, 2m 5f 190y, 22 runners)
Although the ground was good to firm at Bellewstown when The Parishioner won his maiden hurdle he shouldn’t be inconvenienced by the softer conditions today. There are already five non runners here and although still relatively inexperienced, The Parishioner races off a low weight here and his rider claims a further 5lb.
3:45 ‘This Is The Ladbrokes Life’ E.B.F. Maiden (2yo, 1m 100y, 8 runners)
Spryt did little wrong on debut at Listowel when chasing home an Aidan O’Brien trained hotpot in Homeland and pushing him all the way to the line to be beaten just half a length. O’Brien runs the exciting debutant Hail The Hero here who cost 525,000 guineas and is well bred. Today, it might just be experience that counts for more and I’m siding with Spryt.
4:20 Irish Stallion Farms E.B.F. Nursery Handicap (2yo, 7f, 7 runners)
Initial only just held on in a driving three way finish at Leopardstown to win his maiden and is unproven as yet on these softer conditions. He’s a lay for me today with both Toscanelli and Intense Style having solid chances of upsetting the favourite.
4:55 Ladbrokes Red Day E.B.F. Fillies Maiden (3yo+, 1m 4f, 7 runners)
Silwana looks a banker here. She made an excellent debut at Cork on soft ground when third to Just Gorgeous. Another of today’s rivals, Beyond Intensity was back in sixth but Silwana will surely improve significantly for that debut run and give that man Dermot Weld yet another Galway winner.
5:25 Ladbrokes ‘Summer Of Sports’ Handicap (50-70) (4yo+, 1m 6f, 19 runners)
Foot Soldier ran a cracker earlier in the week when second to Hidden Universe and shouldn’t be inconvenienced by either the step back in trip or the softer ground today.
5:55 Ladbrokes Top Treble Flat Race (4-7yo, 2m, 15 runners)
Call Vinnie is another who was second here earlier in the week and gets another bite at the cherry today. This looks an easier opportunity and he can go one better.
