AFONSO FOR REPEAT WIN: SHAMROCK looks ahead to Perth today and Dundalk on Friday where he strongly fancies the chances of Aidan O’Brien’s Afonso De Sousa in the final race.
Afonso De Sousa won the same race 12 months ago when reappearing from a break and again returns to the track after an absence to contest the ‘Dundalk Stadium – Light Up Your Night Race’ – the final race on the Dundalk card at 9.10pm.
He’s clearly not been the easiest horse to train for Aidan O’Brien and has only had three runs since last years win in this. He went on to finish creditable thirds in Group and Listed races here at Dundalk.
He was well beaten in the Irish Lincolnshire in his comeback this season at the Curragh but the ground was very testing that day and it could just be that all-weather is his best racing surface.
This looks fairly competitive, so we should get a decent price on the selection. The biggest dangers might come from his two stable companions Festive Cheer and Indian Maharaja who were both well beaten in better company last time out.
I picked the wrong Gordon Elliott trained horse at Perth yesterday but the trainer is back today and hopefully can land the stayers novices hurdle at 3.20 with I C Gold who won well at the track last time out over a shorter trip.
