HEAVY GOING AT ASCOT: It’s hardly been the perfect preparation for Champions Day. A growing list of high profile non runners and ground which is now officially heavy.
The ground moved officially to heavy at Ascot on Saturday after 42mm of rain in the last 48 hours and although there is more rain forecast this week officials are confident that the Champions Day card is not in jeopardy.
Nick Smith, head of public relations at Ascot said: “There are no concerns about the raceday going ahead at all. There is rain forecast but not deluges and we expect it to be run on soft ground.”
Smith added that no contingency plans have been put in place and the reasons behind the two high profile withdrawals of Australia and Kingman were injury based, rather than the testing ground.
The non runner list also includes: Slade Power, Kingston Hill, Tapestry, Miss France, Olympic Glory, Taghrooda, Sole Power, The Fugue, Rizeena, Mukhadram, Sultanina and Tiggy Wiggy.
Best of the Irish raiders at this stage might be the Dermot Weld trained Vote Often who is a real mudlark and looks a strong contender for the QIPCO British Champions Fillies & Mares Stakes.
She is lightly raced, finished third in the Irish 1000 Guineas but notably won two of her four starts when the ground was soft or deeper.
