FREE! 108 FEATURE-RACE WINNERS: You don’t even have to buy a paper. Follow Daqman Flat (2014) and Jumps (2013-14) and you would have had big-race winners galore, 108 of them in the same races tipped in for value by Pricewise of the Racing Post (who scored 44).
FLAT: DAQMAN 69, PRICEWISE 32: Daqman ended the 2014 Flat yesterday with, appropriately, Sound Investment (WON 15-2 from 12.7 on BETDAQ. That was not a Pricewise race but he finished up winning their challenge 69-32. Daqman’s other star bets ended up:
BULL’S-EYE: 204 points profit
BANKERS (current) 13 out of 17
JUMPS: DAQMAN 39, PRICEWISE 12: Daqman launched his challenge at the start of the last jumps season, which he won 39-12, his winners including these winter wonders:
WON 20-1 TRIOLO D’ALENE (Hennessy Gold Cup, November)
WON 16-1 RIGADIN DE BEAUCHENE (Grand National Trial, February)
WON 12-1 BALLYNAGOUR (Cheltenham, March)
WON 12-1 ON HIS OWN (Thyestes Chase, January)
WON 12-1 SPRING HEELED (Cheltenham, March)
TWINLIGHT CAN GET RUB OF THE GREEN
1.20 Navan (Ladbrokes Ireland Lismullen Hurdle) This has produced three Hatton’s Grace winners (Fairyhouse, December), in Solerina, Catch Me and Voler La Vedette since 2004.
Zaidpour has already been first and second in the Hattons Grace and won the Tara Hurdle (Grade 2) on today’s course.
Officially, Zaidpour is on the 156 mark, Pittoni 145, Darwins Fox 141. Zaidpour’s penalties close the gap, but Pittoni has not been seen in public since winning the Ballsbridge at Leopardstown in March, 2012.
He used to go well fresh but the Charles Byrnes yard is out of form and out of luck, with an unenviable 50% record of fallers (four from the last eight starters), including two well-backed favourites.
Darwins Fox has run some good races at the Galway and Fairyhouse festivals and the same can be said for his recent Graded second at Tipperary, though well outpointed at levels by the very smart 155-rated Rebel Fitz, who equates with Zaidpour here.
2.25 Navan (Ladbrokes Ireland Fortria Chase) Sequence scorers Big Zeb (seven wins out of nine); Flemenstar (seven in a row) and, previously, the mighty Moscow Flyer (10 out of 11) have all taken this in their stride.
Nearest to a star this time around is Twinlight, three times a back-to-back winner, including up to this Grade 2 level last year around this time. He beat Days Hotel 14 lengths in the Hilly Way after that one ran Flemenstar to a length and a quarter in this Fortria Chase.
Baily Green could be counted a sequence horse on his seven in a row as a novice chaser. Mouse Morris’s gelding, getting 6lb, is a year younger than Twinlight and has two years on Days Hotel.
Baily Green, unlucky faller in the Cheltenham Champion Chase (Special Tara sixth), made up for it in part when jumping brilliantly but finished only runner-up in the Webster Cup on today’s course later in March. He then had Twinlight behind when fourth in the Champion Chase at Punchestown.
Arnaud is another Charles Byrnes, and I would prefer to see that stable back on its feet before I invest. Twinlight wins when fresh and is given the edge after Baily Green’s disappointing return when running very flat (pulled up) last month, though Mouse Morris is back in form now.
3.00 Navan (Ladbrokes On Course Ireland Handicap Hurdle) The trick at this time of year is to find potential among the young horses. Five-year-olds and six-year-olds have won it six times all told in the decade, including the last three.
Robert Tyner, who makes a 600-mile round trip from Kinsale, Cork, has had five winners out of six still standing with those starting 4-1 or shorter in the last two weeks.
Interesting that he brought Dfordarsi up to Navan for the Kells Hurdle two months back. He stayed on well and a step up in trip at Tipperary (he was third) on the last day suggests he has a chance here with a light weight in the mud.
Cool Oscar, the winner at Tipperary, will be 16lb worse off with Dfordarsi this afternoon. Not to be confused with Gallant Oscar, who won the Meath Hurdle here in June, but is 11lb higher now.
ROLL ON HAS EDGE IN RACE OF WINNERS
2.40 Auteuil Paul Nicholls bids for a second Grade 1 in Paris in nine days after Zarkandar’s win on the first day of the month.
Back to form at home with five winners in a row still standing last week, Nicholls sends Art Mauresque out for his first start since stomach ulcers kept him off the track 267 days.
Sam Twiston-Davies’ mount, second at Auteuil to the smart Vicenzo Mio as a three-year-old, takes on prolific scorers Roll On Has and A Pleines Dents, who defeated Allez Combieres (now with Willie Mullins) in a bumper.
Roll On Has, who gets 5lb from them, has already beaten most of this field, which has taken a total of 40 races, though they are only four-year-olds.
CRY ‘COME ON STEVE!’ TWICE AT RASEN
2.15 Market Rasen Paul Nicholls has Nick Scholfield riding for him at Market Rasen, with their Celestine pressing Final Countdown for favouritism in the opener.
Black River is clear favourite in this novices limited-handicap chase, with very little to back that up in the book, compared with Seventh Sky’s recent success.
This is a step up for Seventh Sky and only Black River’s second start in 11 months. I wonder if they can catch front-runner Viva Steve round this switch-back track.
Mick Channon, who has big plans for the jumps this season, has had a great year and Viva Steve gets in here nearly a stone off the top weight: 9.2 on BETDAQ this morning.
3.55 Market Rasen I’ll play another wild card (no, not the horse of that name) to be saddled by Steve Gollings, who trains a few miles down the road at Scamblesby.
I fancy his Conquisto to win at Huntingdon on Tuesday. Meanwhile, I’ll try for some easy stake money for that from Make Me A Fortune (13.0 this morning), though Jayo Time must be backed as a saver.
