LISTED ACTION AT GOWRAN PARK: The feature race on Sunday at Gowran Park is the Victor McCalmont Memorial Stakes for fillies at 4.00.
Dermot Weld saddles two in this year’s renewal of the Victor McCalmont Memorial Stakes at Gowran Park, a race in which he has a good record.
The pick is clearly the Pat Smullen ridden Carla Bianca who was in blistering form last season and arrives here seeking a five timer.
Two of her recent four wins came at Listed level – the same as today – but on her latest start at the Curragh she was good enough to win a Group 3. She loves the fast ground and with the Weld stable in such good form should prove really hard to beat.
Euphrasia is only 1lb inferior on official ratings and has the benefit of a recent run. She finished a fair enough third to another Weld runner, Fascinating Rock, at Leopardstown earlier in the month but that came on soft ground. The bulk of her form has come on a softer surface so her ability to handle the faster surface would have to be taken on trust for her supporters.
