I must have looked like a right wally driving home from the Madejski after our win against Newcastle Falcons. There I was, in the car, screaming and shouting at the radio willing Man United to score and get the 2-1 win that would’ve got the column off to a blinding start. You can imagine the ‘special’ words I reserved for Ryan Giggs as he missed that late sitter!

By the time you’re reading this a lot of the weekend’s sporting action will have happened. I’m sure Sebastian Vettel will have secured back-to-back Formula One titles at the Japan GP and we’ll know who’s made the World Cup semis in New Zealand. So, I’m looking further ahead for this week’s best bets.

The group phase of Euro 2012 qualifying concludes on Tuesday night, however, there aren’t any wagers that have really caught my eye. Though, for the tournament itself, I can’t see beyond Spain at around 3.9 on BETDAQ. If anything they’ve somehow got even better since winning Euro 2008 and the World Cup.

For anyone into horseracing, this Saturday coming is a real highlight as it’s QIPCO British Champions Day at Ascot. And even if you don’t know your way around the form book there’s one race everyone should watch. Frankel runs in the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes and he’s a freak of a horse, up there with the best of all time. You won’t get rich backing him at 1.33 – although trainer Sir Henry Cecil and connections will if he takes the £1 million prize money.

I’ll stick to football again for my main bet this week, and it’s another Man United game, except this time I’m going against them. They face Liverpool next Saturday at Anfield and I’ve got a really good feeling about Kenny Dalglish’s outfit. These games are always great for banter among the boys and there will be plenty of it before this one. Nick Kennedy’s a United fan and loves to put it about. He’s been piping up a lot lately, but I think he’ll be quiet after this one.
