Irish jumps racing steps up another gear this afternoon with the Grade 1 JNwine.com Champion Chase at Down Royal but it doesn’t look much of a betting heat as it is very much at the mercy of Don Cossack – officially the best chaser in England or Ireland.
He looked in grand order at Punchestown recently when readily beating Roi Du Mee in the Irish Daily Star Chase and it is hard to envisage a turn around in form today from Roi Du Mee who won this in 2013.
The other Graded race on the card is the one that Don Cossack won last year – the Powers Irish Whiskey Chase (Grade 2). The Paul Nicholls trained Ptit Zig is the market leader. He landed a sequence of four wins in a row last year before falling at Ascot in a Grade 1 and then finishing a creditable fifth to Vautour in the JLT Novices’ Chase at the Cheltenham Festival.
His form looks superior to Clarcam who was third in a Grade 2 at Gowran Park last time out but Clarcam does enjoy a fitness advantage and may just edge it.
For the nap I’m going with Death Duty in the concluding bumper. The Gordon Elliott trained runner finished a good third on debut under rules at Fairyhouse.
