ANNIE’S RETURN: With no Irish racing today SHAMROCK catches up with the morning news including a possible pre-Cheltenham return of Annie Power.
It was widely anticipated that we wouldn’t see Annie Power until the Festival in March after she suffered an injury at home before being prepared for the Hatton’s Grace Hurdle at Fairyhouse last month.
However, her trainer Willie Mullins has issued a bullish statements and said: “I’m much happier with Annie Power. She’s riding out and she’s recovering as quick as I’d hoped. I’m able to bring her forwards a little and hopefully she’ll maintain that and she doesn’t go backwards. I’m keeping her comeback as Cheltenham but if we can get a run before that would be a bonus. At the moment, she’s just going for the mares’ race but now she’s a little more forward and if we get a run into her we’ll see.”
Mullins has also revealed that Pont Alexandre will not be seen over the Christmas period. He made a winning chasing debut at Punchestown having been off the track for nearly 1,000 days but Mullins is not rushing into a follow-up race and said: “I don’t want to think about Christmas with Pont Alexandre, I’m going to see how he is. He’d been off for long enough and I think it would be too soon.”
The BBC have revealed that Tony McCoy will be honoured with the Lifetime Achievement award at this year’s BBC Sports Personality of the Year ceremony in Belfast on Sunday. McCoy said: “It’s a huge honour and I’m thrilled to be accepting it so close to home in Belfast. I’m looking forward to what will be a very special night.”
Another blank day in Ireland. Racing resumes on Friday evening at Dundalk with an eight race card underway at 5.30pm.
