LAYS HAT-TRICK BID: Shamrock today attempts to add to the success of his last two lays, Montan (2nd 5-2 favourite) at Galway on Sunday and Colombian (2nd 4-6 favourite) at Leicester yesterday. Irish racing resumes at Punchestown tomorrow (pending an inspection).

Lay into those favourites! There are two good things today at Catterick and Chepstow. Good things to lose, I mean. They are both paper favourites, Celtic Sultan and Rileyev.

Celtic Sultan (3.50 Catterick) won at Kempton last time out but two things have changed: this is turf not Polytrack and this is softish ground not the good and firm he has won on in his career on grass (and then only once in more than two years).

The seven-year-old’s form on soft ground is 0000. The number of runs he has needed between winning races since a three-year-old have been nine, 15 and nine. Back to back, after a win, his form figures are 34020.

Rileyev (5.10 Chepstow) has a string of wins in his paper form but they only come after warm-up races. His form after long breaks is 043.

Trainer Venetia Williams is currently in the doldrums with no winners from 48 runners in the last 206 days and, according to the Racing Post computer assessment of how her horses have been racing, Rileyev is only likely to run to 17% of his ability.

It’s hard to make convincing cases for ‘Shark’ Hanlon’s Irish raiders at Chepstow – Sparkling Tara (4.10), Super Collider (4.40) and Darenjan (5.10) – but, with the possible cloud over the favourite, Rileyev, I’ll have an old punt each way on Darenjan.

SHAMROCK’S BETS
NAP: Well Hello There (3.10 Chepstow)
EACH WAY: Darenjan (5.10 Chepstow)
