HAYLEY TURNER: It’s the calm before the storm with the Derby and Oaks next weekend. Its been talked about by everyone so I thought I would save that till next week. By then we will have the definite runners, draw, ground and Jockey bookings, so we can get the microscope out.
A topic that came durning the week when I was doing ATR was Champion Apprentice. It’s way to early for the Jockeys to be thinking about it but, we could have a good ante-post bet. Tom Marquand, who was last years Champion Apprentice and is also favourite. He certainly has the ability but my only doubt is, will he get thrown as many his way when he loses his claim in 3-4 winners time?
Josephine Gordon is another with a good shout, I’d like to see her get some rides in bigger races. The last time I looked George Woods was around 8-1 and he seems the best value of all. For someone who is in their first season, he has been extremely impressive, 7lb is such a huge advantage, particularly in the big handicap. He’s very light and no doubt, his guvnor James Fanshawe with give him the support but will keep him grounded at the same time.
The Champion Jockey betting is right to favour Silvester De Sousa but, and God forbid, he has to take some time out through injury, it is racing after all. I think Andrea Atzeni is a big price and worth a dabble. He’s still young, has the hunger, he’s rarely in the wrong place. He has done nothing but improve.
The Haydock card looks the most appealing today. Home of the Brave is the favourite in the 3.10 Group 3, he is a short enough price so I looked elsewhere. David Simcock’s horse Brenton Rock has been a steady improver and ran a great race on his 2016 debut, that was over a mile. His best form has been over 7f which he drops back to today. David never has his horses fully revved up on there first run for a while so, is certain to come on for that.
In the following race Gifted Master for Hugo Palmer has solid chance, and even at 2.88 I think he’s going to be tough to beat. La Rioja despite taking on the boys could chase him home.
