It’s a walkover at halfway. In fact, halfway house in the Flat season was two weeks ago, but the story remains the same for the rest of the campaign: Aidan O’Brien has romped home for the 2016 British trainers’ title. Bookies should pay out now.
He is 10-1 on, £1.4m ahead of his last year’s total and more than £3m clear of his nearest rival, John Gosden, who is way, way down on last season’s Golden (Horn) haul.
It’s a poor year, too, for William Haggas, Richard Fahey, Charles Hills and David O’Meara, and I can’t quite see the ammunition to improve their fire-power in the second half.
Half-time heroes are Sir Michael Stoute, Hugo Palmer and Clive Cox. One knighted veteran on the brink of his total for 2015 already in a dramatic rise in really skilful use of the material in his yard..
And two future contenders for his accolade of racing’s horse whisperer: Hugo Palmer, already equalling last year’s total of winners and a quarter of a million up on prizemoney won, and Clive Cox, who has doubled last year’s earnings already.
In the jockeys’ table, Silvestre De Sousa’s percentages have dropped away, well below his four nearest rivals.
And I can’t see him keeping the title, with Ryan Moore and an upwardly mobile James Doyle breathing down his neck. The 5-2 on (yes, really, 2-5) De Sousa is plain nonsense. He’s not so much as an even-money chance!
The season is also about the rise and rise of Oisin Murphy, but star jockey stat so far is the phenomenal 60% (6-10) strike rate when Jim Crowley rides for Ralph Beckett.

FLOWER TO POWER HOME AT SALISBURY
2.30 Salisbury 18 non runners at Salisbury at the time of writing, thanks to the overnight deluge which has left the course declaring soft ground ahead of their eight race card.
Interestingly though, none of the two-year-olds have been taken out of the two divisions of the opener.
Richard Hannon’s Plant Pot Power should easily be good enough to land the second division at 2.30 after his promising Sandown debut when third to stable companion Larchmont Lad. It was a good effort, which crucially came with give in the ground (good to soft), so we can be certain that won’t be a negative.
How many punters will back debutant Percy Thrower in a forecast with Plant Pot Power for the novelty factor alone ?? !!!
4.15 Catterick Tricky Dicky is up 5lb for a course and distance win 13 days ago but it was a modest contest and he can follow up here from pole position of stall one.
8.20 Chelmsford Trainer William Haggas has hit a purple patch (three winners from last four runners) and can continue the good run tonight in Essex with Entsar.
The filly has her easiest task to date after a debut fourth at Newbury and then a good run over a similar trip as tonight when third to the odds-on Ruscombe at Doncaster. The runner-up from that race has run well since and the form looks solid.
