PREVIEW
With the senior team making a right mess of their qualifier against Switzerland last weekend, England’s top youngsters will hope to show that the Three Lions have a bright future when they are in action at the 2011 UEFA Under-21 European Championship over the next couple of weeks.

Former England defender Stuart Pearce takes his cubs to Denmark with the aim of going one better than their runners-up finish two years ago in Sweden.

Psycho’s boys lost 4-0 in the final then and he has seen some of his most experienced players pull out of ahead of this competition, with Andy Carroll, Jack Wilshere, Kieran Gibbs and Micah Richards all sidelined. That will leave the spotlight firmly on Phil Jones and Jordan Henderson as everyone catches their first glimpse of the pair since big money moves to Manchester United and Liverpool respectively.

England’s first test is against Spain, a side they beat 2-0 at in the second match of the group stage in 2009 with goals from Frazier Campbell and James Milner.

A repeat victory is going to be a tall order against a side considered outright favourites at 2.92. Spain’s form in competitive U21 games is impressive and they have a very strong chance of adding the Euro 2011 title to the country’s bulging trophy cabinet.

They have plenty of experience and quality in the ranks not to mention a couple of World Cup winners in Juan Mata and Javi Martinez who are joined by stars-of-tomorrow Bojan Krkic and Diego Capel.

England have a number of household names in their squad with the likes Chris Smalling, Daniel Sturridge, Jack Rodwell and Danny Welbeck and are second in the betting for the outright market at 5.5, but they could struggle to breakdown the Spanish and might be relieved to get this game out the way with early on. Back Spain in this contest at 2.10.
