STATS WORTH FOLLOWING IN TOLWORTH
- Since 2006 the winner has been trained by either Paul Nicholls or Nicky Henderson on 7 of 9 occasions (the race was abandoned in both 2009 and 2010).
- In that time period the favourites have won on 5 occasions.
- The highest priced winners were 9/1 (Captain Conan 2012, Royal Boy 2014)
- Seven out of the nine winner were aged either 5 or 6.
- 10 of the last 12 winners have won between 1-2 times over hurdles previously
- 9 of the last 12 winners have won last time out
So where does that leave us ahead of Saturday’s big novice event? Capitaine ticks a lot of boxes, he is trained by the right man, is the correct age, has the required experience over hurdles and has won last time out. Is his current price around 2/1 good value? Find out tomorrow with DAQMAN’s full preview for the Tolworth Hurdle.
WETHERBY: HAPPY DIVA TO MAKE HAPPY PUNTERS
1.05 Wetherby A mare in form can be very hard to beat and as a result Happy Diva is fancied to make it two in a row in the second at Wetherby. She demolished her rivals on Boxing Day at Fontwell and a 7lbs penalty should not be enough to stop her. She is only just turned six and looks on the upgrade, her trainer clearly agrees as she is also entered for a listed contest tomorrow. An early show of 2.9 is fair and Happy Diva could make some happy punters this afternoon.
1.35 Wetherby An open looking limited handicap here where Jonjo O’Neill’s Mustmeetalady is fancied to get his head in front. He ran well in this grade last time on his second chase start where jumping errors were his undoing. If he has ironed them out on his 49 day break he looks capable of a big run. He is previously a course winner, which is a plus and is a proven stayer. Expect him to be held up for a late run under the excellent Aidan Coleman and the 8.2 available on BETDAQ might look a steal.
2.10 Wetherby Westend Story was the class act in bumpers but his form with either a point-to-point fence or a hurdle in front of him reads F, F, 3 (beaten 20 lengths) which is a concern if you are betting at odds-on. With this in mind, Lakeside Castle is offered as an alternative. Placed behind some decent horses in Irish bumpers he has now switched from Mrs M Gannon’s stable to that of Dan Skelton and he can be expected to improve. He looks a long way clear of the rest of his rivals and if Westend Story flops again he will be very hard to beat. The 3.45 available on BETDAQ looks like a fair play.
DUNDALK: TRUST GRAVITY TO RISE
7.00 Dundalk Specific Gravity has been an excellent servant to connections and is enjoying somewhat of a renaissance in recent weeks. He steps up to 12 furlongs for the first time today but is a previous winner over 10.5 here. The highly touted young apprentice Rossa Ryan takes 10lbs off his back and he could be a bit of value at 6 on BETDAQ.
KEMPTON: HEAT CAN BURN HIS RIVALS
3.30 Kempton A late April foal that has just turned three would not be my idea of a bet at odds-on over a mile and a half against older horses so the 1.82 available about The Blues Master isn’t for me. Instead Burning Heat is suggested, he was an ok horse in France when trained by John Hammond and showed a similar level of ability on his first UK start last time. He has shown an ability to handle all-weather surfaces in the past and at 5.1 on BETDAQ he looks like a better option.
