4-1 BULL’S-EYE AND BANKER UP ON DAY ONE: Daqman landed a double whammy at York yesterday, with a 20-point banker and a win-50 bull’s-eye bet in consecutive big races, the Great Voltigeur and the Juddmonte International.
WON 4-1 ULYSSES (International, bull’s-eye bet)
WON 4-6 CRACKSMAN (Great Voltigeur, banker nap)
ENABLE HOT COOKIE IN THE YORKSHIRE OAKS: Cracksman sent Daqman into a 69-12 lead over Pricewise, 308 points ahead of him to a single-unit stake. Today they clash in the 1.55 and 3.00 York, with Daqman hoping for winners at 13.0 and 12.0 on BETDAQ. Enable in the Yorkshire Oaks provides another big day for Fortune Cookies, which won with Ulysses yesterday.
TANGLED CAN TIE THEM IN A KNOT
1.55 York Kevin Ryan, who has won this with such as Bogart, scored here over the York CD on good to soft with Hey Jonesy (stall 18) only 26 days ago, and second and third have both won since.
But he must be worried that the first four home in yesterday’s sprint opener were all drawn in single figures. Over 6f in the last, high numbers were second, third and fourth but were pipped by stall 5.
Richard Hannon, who trained last year’s winner, has the best of both worlds today, with 13.0 BETDAQ offer Tangled in 3 and De Bruyne Horse (first-time blinkers to sharpen him for the drop in trip) in 16.
Third, fourth, fifth, sixth and seventh behind Tangled at Newmarket were winners before or after that event. This is a furlong shorter but on slower ground.
De Bruyne Horse, who finished close up in the Coventry Stakes won on the soft, also over 7f, on the last day in France.
Chatburn should take the low numbers along, where the worry about Great Prospector is his slow starting and Tangled gets my vote.
Queen Mary seventh Darkanna looks to have a handy weight but beside her in the high draw are Prince Ahwahnee, De Bruyne Horse and Hey Jonesy (5.7).
HAGGAS HOPE COULD BE SPECIAL
2.25 York Richard Hannon (Natural) and William Haggas (Special Purpose) have won this with decent sorts in Tiggy Wiggy and Besharah in recent seasons.
Roger Varian (Madeline), Wesley Ward (Happy Like A Fool) and Actress (Aidan O’Brien) have never won it but are dominating the BETDAQ market.
Ascot form is represented by Queen Mary runner-up Happy Like A Fool (American horses usually prefer the going on top and Albany fifth Madeline. Actress, who was a neck behind Madeline at the royal meeting, has since performed well against the colts.
Threading may lack experience against this kind of form but Special Purpose has twice been impressive and could be the value at 7.4 for a yard which is two out of three in the race.
JUST ONE WORD TO SAY TO YOU
3.00 York Ulysses yesterday. Enable and Coronet in the Yorkshire Oaks (next race). All represent my Fortune Cookies horses-to-follow list, to which Ronald R (same sire as Enable) was added after his narrow defeat in the Britannia Stakes, and clearly likes a big field.
El Hayem didn’t act on the soft ground at Newbury and, though it’s drying up at York today, Ronald R (BETDAQ 9.8) looks best.
One Word More (tasty at 12.0) was denied a clear run at Goodwood (soft): Mythical Madness, Blair House and G K Chesterton behind.
3.35 York (Yorkshire Oaks) Enable is now in the Frankel league, so our 25-1 Epsom Oaks winner is no longer a working-man’s bet, maybe 2-7 SP. I’ll put her in my Daq Multiples.
MORI FOR MORE STOUTE MAGIC
4.15 York (Galtres Stakes) A good run by Coronet in the Yorkshire Oaks would boost the Frankel filly Mori, who ran her to a neck at Royal Ascot.
Mori’s magic dam, Midday, won the Nassau and the Vermeille on soft ground, and Mori looks like another massive improver for next year in the Sir Michael Stoute mould.
Another Frankel, Aljezeera, has that ‘could be anything’ look and trainer Luca Cumani comes to York today on a hat-trick for the yard after a double at Brighton and Yarmouth on Tuesday.
