DAQMAN IS 309 POINTS UP ON PRICEWISE: So near and yet so far as the horse Daqman named as a 100-1 gamble for the Irish Champion Stakes, Poet’s Word, was beaten half a length at 10-1. Big races everywhere went to 10-1, 20-1 and 25-1 shots, and Daqman v Pricewise was a goalless draw. Scores remain 70-13 to Daqman, who is 309 points clear of his rival to single-unit stakes.

EURO DOUBLE BILL: LEGER AND ARC TRIALS: There’s a sensational Sunday double bill today from The Curragh on Irish St Leger day and from Chantilly where he Arc trials are being run. Daqman v Pricewise: 3.15 & 4.15 The Curragh and 4.35 Chantilly

THE SMART CALL IS STOUTE

2.00 The Curragh There’s precious little between Tithonus, Snap Shots and Rattling Jewel on their 1-2-5 finish in a similar race on this course in July, and at least one of them is likely to contest the finish.

The English currently have a hold on the race, going for a four-timer and, despite his huge weight, I can’t imagine Raucous traveling over if William Haggas didn’t think he had a big chance. Ryan Moore booked: 11.5 on BETDAQ early mouse. Raucous has finished in the first four five times at Group level.

2.35 The Curragh (Blandford Stakes) Ryan Moore deserts the 2017 Irish Oaks winner, Seventh Heaven, in favour of Rain Goddess, second to Enable in this year’s running of the same Classic.

But it’s not a great race for Ballydoyle with just one winner in the decade, which has seen three for Dermot Weld, who runs Royal Whip winner Shamreen, and three for Sir Michael Stoute, who drops Smart Call (BETDAQ 8.4) down from Group 1 and pinches Donnacha O’Brien for the ride,

3.05 The Curragh (Flying Five) After a long run of English winners (and other foreign sprinting types!) Ireland has recaptured this race in the last two seasons, the 2017 winner, Ardhoomey, back to defend his title off a 5lb higher mark and without a win since.

He looked like a handicapper taking a weak renewal that day. Compare his mark of 108 this afternoon with the 121 rating for Caravaggio at a difference of only a pound!

But Caspian Prince was also emerging from handicaps (at the age of eight? come on!) to win a Group 2 here at the Curragh in July, about 8lb better on the day than Ardhoomey, so sprinters seem to be much of a muchness apart from the seriously big names, like Harry Angel.

It all appears to recommend Caravaggio as super-nap material at 2.52 on BETDAQ this morning. Yes, they are all looking jaded after a long season and shock results abound but Caravaggio has had only four races. This is his swan song, surely, if he can’t win today.

BECKFORD NATIONAL BEST

3.40 The Curragh (Moyglare Stud Stakes) There’s not always a Minding (2015) in this but winners are generally high quality, with seven going to Ballydoyle so far.

They have 50% of today’s field and Ryan Moore has chosen Clemmie, though Magical (Donnacha O’Brien) has already beaten two other stablemates, Happily and September.

Clemmie points up the Albany at Royal Ascot, in which she was only seventh behind Different League and Alpha Centauri, and she beat a filly called Nyaleti in July by less than September.

That all adds up to Alpha Centauri and Magical but for one major question. What about the going? Well, most of that form was on a soundish) surface, while Magical’s Curragh defeat of Happily and September last month was – by hands and heels riding – on soft. I took 4.5 on BETDAQ this morning.

4.15 The Curragh (National Stakes) Gleneagles and Churchill for Aidan O’Brien following New Approach and Dawn Approach for Jim Bolger make this one of the great to-year-old trials of the decade.

That fabulous four came to this rated 111, 113 and 115 (twice) and today’s Ballydoyle trio at 107 (Rostropovich), 106 (Coat of Arms) and 102 (Berkeley Square) look short on the quality required.

You could say surely you mean on the form required, but since they have all had at least four starts, we are entitled to question their quality.

And the form of the Railway Stakes when Beckford (113 rated now) outpaced Verbal Dexterity (110 for Bolger) suggests that Gordon Elliott can ring the changes this year.

4.50 The Curragh (Irish St Leger) The epithets ‘winner’ or ‘shock loser’, which have applied to Order Of St George in this race in the last two seasons, could apply again if his odds-on offers can be believed. He’s 1.48, with 8.0 bar one, this morning in the BETDAQ orange

Put him in your Daq Multiples but look elsewhere for a place at a better price than he is for the win!

The shock last year was provided by Wicklow Brave but ‘St George’ slayed that old dragonlast month. He’s also turned around Navan Sprint form witch Torcedor. That leaves 8.8 offer Dartmouth with the chance to trouble him most.

BATEEL VERMEILLE VALUE

1.50 Deauville (Prix Niel) This column has 10.0 Cracksman ante-post on BETDAQ for the Arc e Triomphe so hopefully we will counting the ‘overs’ after he has strolled home here.

3.15 Chantilly (Pix Vermeille) If there’s a wonder filly in this like Allez France, Zarkava or Treve, it must be an English raider! But God Given needs to leap a stone under Luca Cumani with only a modest Group 3 at Deauville on her CV so far, though even more improvement is required from the French pair, Balyouna and Strathspey

Of the older brigade, Bateel has beaten Traffic Jam and Ajman Prxincess (holds Left Hand) but on that form runs a dead-heat with The Black Princess on that one’s Haydock defeat of Ajman Princess.

But Bateel has run only six races in her life and the 7.0 BETDAQ offer looks the most likely winner having scored easing down in her last two starts which have been stepping stones from Group 3 to Group 2.

5.10 Chantilly (Prix Gladiateur) It’s hard to see the last big hot-pot of the day, Vazirabad, giving way to a shock, but Flymetothestars’ 5.3 agaisnst the favourite’s 1.94 gives you a chance to oppose the one and cover on the other.
