My ABC recipe had two missing ingredients. The draw and the going could be icing on the Cesarewitch cake for some but may melt the chances of others. The draw is today’s enigma but the going narrows the field to a select few fancied horses.
Seven of the last 10 Cesarewitch winners have come from the low 18 stalls but an early trend to the nearside was maintained yesterday when Laurens (drawn 10 of 12) took the Fillies’ Mile. Then First Nation (stall 15 of 16) scored coming across from the bend, over the mile and a half of the Old Rowley Cup.
Since ‘follow my leader’ is likely now, crowding looks inevitable, so my decision on the day is to stick with the top jockeys and to assume they have the brains to extract themselves from this melee of 35 runners.
Willie Mullins insists that the good ground will suit his versatile mare, Lagostovegas (Ryan Moore, 13.0 on BETDAQ). It will also bring in Leading Light’s brother John Constable (Jim Crowley), who is the handicap snip at 9.6 on his dramatic improvement over Jumps.
Among the bottom half of the handicap, Frederic and Duke Street have also scored on top of the ground but so far only at a lower level. Withhold may just lack the required experience.
So, lightly raced, a firm-ground horse and winner of the trial, Who Dares Wins (10.5) has to be the one to complete my 1-2-3.
10-1 IN THE EYE FOR THE EXPERT?
2.25 Newmarket Purser sas a warm morning order in the BETDAQ market, while Arbalet, who finished in front of him at Sandown, drifted right out.
The dogs were quiet, too, about the Ballydoyle pair Zabriskie (by Frankel) and Flag of Honour (Galileo), both easy to back at 9.0 and 11.5 respectively.
It all went to steer me toward 4.4 offer Ghaiyyath, who looked special when making all in his maiden over this CD first time up in September.
3.00 Newmarket (Dewhurst Stakes) Backing two-year-old champions ante-post for the Classics is a seesaw that needs balanced betting, no more so than in the last two seasons when Aidan O’Brien won this guide with Air Force Blue (didn’t train on) and Churchill (won the Guineas).
Now O’Brien saddles half of those remaining in this Dewhurst if you have taken out Exeter Eye as unbackable. The maestro has had 11 losers in a row since the start of this Newmarket meeting, including favourites I Can Fly and Magical.
But the ratings here give him a big chance with US Navy Flag, if you fancy a flutter against the favourite. I could get 10.0 on BETDAQ, with a place bet as insurance against the loss of the win stake.
Goodwood form is rarely reliable, and Zaman, runner-up to Expert Eye on the Sussex track, had earlier been fourth to O’Brien’s Gustav Klimt on the July Course here.
Gustav Klimt is rated 109, which is 8lb adrift of US Navy Flag, who is officially only a pound behind Expert Eye.
LION KING CAN LAND SUPERNAP
3.15 York (Coral Sprint) Visored first time, Al Qahwa is massively better off with Flying Pursuit on CD form of July but at Ripon both were behind Pipers Note, who was fourth in this race 12 months ago.
Pipers was only fifth in the Portland to Spring Loaded, who has returned to form under Joey Haynes but remains high in the handicap. Spring Loaded and Stake Aclaim were both behind Upstaging at Windsor but he, in turn, is held on Goodwood form by Growl at the revised weights.
Last time Mr Lupton got his ground, he was fifth in a Group-3 at the Curragh. He was a York CD winner last season and is down 8lb – plus a 7lb claim – since being favourite (struck into) to beat Eqtiraan in June. I took 11.0 on BETDAQ this morning.
5.00 York Alan King has chances in the Cesarewitch after a one-two in the Trial. The second horse that day, Coeur De Lion, is balloted out of the big one this afternoon and runs in a lower grade herewith not a lot to beat. Supernap

5.25 Newmarket I fancy Fidaawy (BETDAQ 7.0) to become one of those ‘late developers’ of Sir Michael Stoute’s. His other runner here, Intiomaition, has won only with cut in the ground, and Stoutie knows about Forest Ranger and Sovereign Debt through Mustashry, who beat them at York.
6.15 Kempton A tasty 14.5 on BETDAQ early mouse, United Kingdom has moved on at home since his Ascot introduction, and streaked clear six lengths on the Summerdown grass gallops n his prep for this. Well drawn.
