1.35 Saint-Cloud Since top French stayer Tac De Boistron (2011) won this near-two-mile test, James Fanshawe (Gale Force) and Willie Mullins (Nichols Canyon) have been over to France and poached the Listed prize.
That’s prompted a three-horse raiding party today from Andrew Balding (St Mary’s), Ralph Beckett (Mistress Quickly) and Tim Easterby, saddling the nine-year-old gelding High Jinx, who used to be with Fanshawe but is now giving away six years to the two others.
He’s spent his days in Group company, since winning the Prix du Cadran for Fanshawe just before a length defeat to Tac De Boistron in the Royal-Oak of three years ago. High Jinx was fourth in this year’s Cadran in September.
Beckett makes a bold late move to get some black type for the lightly-raced Mistress Quickly, who showed that she stays when scoring at Newbury in July but that was a class-3 handicap.
It’s an even bigger leap for the class-4 winner St Mary’s. She’s won twice at around today’s trip but has only ever succeeded on ground described as ‘good.’
Beckett’s is the stable for fillies and he’s the man in form, with current figures in three days of 124103100.

1.20 Warwick Rebecca Curtis thinks that Just A Thought could be a Grand National horse one day, and steps the mare up in trip this afternoon.

1.30 Fontwell David Pipe has promised a revival for Pond House after its fortunes dipped last season, his lowest score since he took over from Martin and landed the Grand National with Comply Or Die. That’s 10 years ago come the 2018 line-up at Aintree.
Pipe is a trainer you need to catch when he’s hot, and his figures since the turn of the month look decent indeed: 120421014041040010, and a 21% strike rate for the last two weeks.
Lady of Longstone (1.30) deserves top weight, reduced by an able claimer, and I took 2.7 in the BETDAQ orange. The offers of 6.0 bar one concerned Roparta Avenue, who is a kinky beast and has won only one race in his life at the age of 10.
3.50 Warwick Kim Bailey had a debutant bumper winner yesterday and Diamond Gait demands a bit of win and place at 10.5 on BETDAQ to keep up the trainer’s run: currently 2134121, still standing.
7.15 Newcastle When the curtain closes on another English Flat season tomorrow, John Gosden will be able to boast one of his best seasons and perhaps his best horse ever in Enable.
The Racing Post’s top (future) rating for this race is his 4.5 BETDAQ offer Pouvoir Magique, who has been fighting against restraint, when running over further.
Could they now give him his head, dropped back in trip? I would, if I were half as good as John Gosden, but his amazing year still didn’t win him the title.
Only one man can claim to be better at the end of this great season, and he had only the second horse home in Melbourne Cup. It’s all in the breeding.
