DAY TWO NAP: SHAMROCK naps in the opener at Cheltenham on Wednesday.
Bitterly disappointing run from Getabird in the opening Supreme yesterday. He raced far too keenly in the early stages and finished tailed off. Maybe the occasion just got to him as a line through Mengli Khan who finished third shows that was a million miles away from his true form.
Hopefully better luck in the opener on Wednesday with Samcro.
All the buzz for a long time has been that this horse is something exceptional and today we’ll find out just how good he is.
The only person that’s been playing down his chances is owner Michael O’Leary who has a adopted a glass half empty view on his chances but whether that’s the double bluff and that he knows deep down he has something special on his hands we’ll soon see.
He’s 5lb clear of his field in the Ballymore on official ratings and has a serious rival in Next Destination but it’s been the manner of Samcro’s wins that had been breathtaking.
He’s unbeaten now in six starts, three bumpers and three hurdle events, he has started odds-on in all of them and even though stepped up to Grade 1 level last time in the Deloitte Novice Hurdle at Punchestown still ran away from his field with consummate ease.
The ground won’t be a problem and like a lot of top class horses the different distances don’t phase either.
At 1.78 on BETDAQ you can argue that all the positives are factored into the price but I really can’t see beyond him and I hope he proves himself to the special horse that he is teasing us as being.
