STAYING POWER: SHAMROCK’s NAP on the third day of the Punchestown Festival runs in the Ladbrokes Champion Stayers Hurdle – a Grade 1 at 5.30pm.

Plenty of scattered showers around at Punchestown this morning so the going will remain on the testing side ahead of racing on day three.

It’s another great card and the Ladbrokes Champion Stayers Hurdle is one of two Grade 1’s.

It looks wide open but it’s dominated both numerically and quality wise by Willie Mullins who has seven of the 12 runners !!!

After his amazing six-timer at the course on Wednesday you need to find some pretty good reasons for opposing his runners at the moment.

The question here of course is which one? It’s interesting to see the support for Bacardys who is on a recovery mission after falling in his last two starts, the latest of which was in the Stayers’ Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival where he was well held by eventual winner stable companion Penhill before falling at the last.

I can’t see why Penhill shouldn’t frank that form and follow up here, especially as he is a fresh horse coming into the race unlike many of his rivals who have had long and gruelling campaigns over the longer distances.

Faugheen is up to three miles for the first time since 2013 but has just lot some of his magic at the moment.
