BETDAQ BIG RACE: SHAMROCK looks forward to a sensational renewal of the Betdaq 2% Commission Punchestown Champion Hurdle this afternoon at 5.30pm.

It would be a great race without Samcro but his entry has made the Betdaq 2% Commission Punchestown Champion Hurdle an unmissable race this afternoon.

He has to be the starting point, given he’s the red hot favourite but many are arguing TOO short in the market as he steps into open company for the first time.

If you go purely on the figures, then you can make a big case for taking him on with Melon on value grounds given Melon is 7lb clear on the ratings.

The unanswered question though is just how much improvement Samcro has left in him and there’s every chance the answer to that is … quite a lot.

He still looked a little green to me at Cheltenham when coming nicely clear over the longer 2m 5f trip to win the Ballymore Novices’ Hurdle and like a lot of top notch horses they are effective over a range of distances and ground conditions and that certainly seems the case with him. I would not expect the step back in trip to blunt his speed.

Wicklow Brave produced a 12/1 shock win in the race last year but was well beaten in the Champion Hurdle in which Melon finished a neck second to Buveur D’Air.

It’s been Willie Mullins meeting so far and I’m sticking with Melon. The prices dictate I’m getting nearly five times the odds with race sponsors BETDAQ compared with the favourite Samcro who still needs to progress. That’s a bet in my book but I’ll accept I could be beaten by an exceptional horse.
