KHAN CAN BE TOP AT LEOPARDSTOWN
Ireland 7, England 1 Kempton has the King George and Chepstow the Welsh National but Ireland has SEVEN Grade-1 races over Christmas in FOUR famous days at Leopardstown. Here’s one for each day from Daqman:
MENGLI KHAN (2.20 Leopardstown, December 26) is appointed to represent the Daqman horses-to-follow list in the Racing Post Novice Chase.
The form book says he put up a ‘hard to match’ display of jumping and galloping at Punchestown late last month.
FOOTPAD (1.15 Leopardstown, December 27) was dropped from the list, after falling at the last when seemingly beaten at Naas in November.
Willie Mullins could also run Min and Great Field, just in case the Footpad redemption day doesn’t happen.
APPLE’S JADE (2.00 Leopardstown, December 28) will be odds on to follow up last year’s Christmas Hurdle victory over Supasundae and Bapaume when the three meet again.
But Mullins has other ideas. As well as Bapaume, he has Faugheen, Benie Des Dieux, Bacardys and Limini to choose from in a bid to wrest back this Grade 1 which he last won in 2016 with the marvellous Vroum Vroum Mag.
LAURINA (2.30 Leopardstown, December 29) There’s no Buveur d’Air to show him up, as happened in the Fighting Fifth at Newcastle, so Samcro is favourite for the Ryanair.
But the one I’m looking forward to is Willie Mullins’ Laurina, who has won her four hurdles by a total of 52 lengths, including the Mares Novices at the Cheltenham Festival.
HOPING FOR PERFECTION
3.10 Exeter Nearly Perfect looks the stand out bet on the Exeter card. There was plenty to like about his comeback performance at Southwell earlier this month when he chased home Commodore Barry. The winner looks well above average and Nearly Perfect can only improve for his hurdling debut.
This doesn’t look the deepest of contests. Ask The Weatherman is running for the first time over hurdles and comes in to this on the back of a PPP sequence over fences.
Unpin Vc won his first two bumpers but was then outclassed and finished last at Cheltenham which might leave Shaughnessy as the danger. The Oliver Sherwood trained runner was a beaten favourite when third here last time but it wasn’t such a bad effort in context of this race and the step up in trip should also be a positive.
3.20 Southwell First Excel can make a bold bid off top weight. He’s very much a course and distance specialist and as regular readers will know how much emphasis I put on that here at Southwell.
He was only pipped three quarters of a length last time out behind Kommander Kirkup and should be able to go one better here.
Piazon won over the minimum trip last time out and might be more exposed under a penalty and racing over this longer trip and the main danger could come from Fink Hill – a course winner two starts ago.
6.30 Chelmsford Just Later improved bundles for his debut effort to finish a good third over course and distance last time out and with further improvement likely can step up to land this seven furlong event.
San Carlos ran better than his price tag of 66/1 at Kempton and looks the danger stepped up in trip.
