IRELAND HAS EARLY CHELTENHAM
Where do the winners come from? I ask that every year, as I chase the races that produce the successful stars at the Cheltenham Festival but there’s a changed set of Leopardstown results to consider this time after last year’s boost.
So, to complete my Fortune Cookies for Cheltenham and beyond, I shall take a particularly close look at Ireland in the next three weeks. After all, they do produce most of the Cheltenham winners!
Tomorrow (Fairyhouse), Sunday and Monday (both Punchestown) could be informative but my main target will be Leopardstown on the weekend of February 2nd and 3rd.
The two-day Dublin Racing Festival there was devised last year to create a city celebration of Jumps racing, perfectly placed to be Ireland’s Cheltenham.
Saturday, February 1: The Ladbrokes Dublin Steeplechase, the Arkle Novice Chase, the Irish Champion Hurdle and the Ladbroke Hurdle are the features on a day of four Grade-1 events.
Sunday, February 2: The Irish Gold Cup and Leopardstown Chase are among seven Graded events.

1.40 Lingfield It’s no surprise to see Philamundo out again quickly after romping home to a 5 length success at Chelmsford a week ago.
Adam Kirby is again in the saddle and the statutory 6lb penalty should be overcome. He is set to go up further in the weights, so it really is a case of striking whilst the iron is hot.
The sudden improvement in form might well be down to the application of the blinkers which are on again today and he should be able to see off the challenge of the in-form pair Mr Mac and Delicate Kiss.
2.30 Huntingdon A very decent renewal of this class 2 juvenile hurdle which threw up a 20/1 shock last year when Esprit De Somoza won.
With the exception of debutant Spectaculis, who showed very little in two starts on the flat, this looks quite open but preference has to go to Prabeni who has six and half lengths to find with Beat The Judge on Kempton form but has an 8lb pull and of the pair Prabeni looks set to be better suited by the slightly faster conditions.
Westbrook Bertie made all to win by 14 lengths at Fontwell but will find this much tougher and Fret D’estruval was well exposed in this grade at Cheltenham last time out.
3.10 Lingfield The Rae Guest trained Minuty has ran well enough on both her starts to suggest she can take a modest race like this.
Always A Drama looks vulnerable under her penalty for a Kempton win and Ballyquin was pretty disappointing when dropped back to this trip and a beaten favourite at Newcastle last time out.
