PREMIER LEAGUE SUNDAY: We preview Sunday’s Premier League games with a recommended BETDAQ bet and extended stats for each match. It’s Sheffield United v Crystal Palace at 2pm and Chelsea v Leicester at 4.30pm.

SHEFFIELD UNITED V CRYSTAL PALACE

2pm It’s fair to say that today won’t be the most glamourous of Super Sunday’s in the Premier League, but it’s an interesting day nonetheless. Sheffield United grinded out a draw last weekend against Bournemouth while Crystal Palace held Everton to a 0-0 draw. On paper, there isn’t much between these sides and who knows – by the end of the season we could be looking back at this fixture as the difference between going down and staying up. A win for either side here would obviously be a massive boost but more so for Sheffield United who are favourites for relegation.

The match odds at the time of writing currently trade; Sheffield United 2.68, Crystal Palace 3.05 and the draw is 3.3. Obviously Sheffield United can look forward to their first home game in the Premier League this season; however Palace performed better away from home last season and this will be a very close fixture. If you look at the calendar year for 2019; only Manchester City have scored more goals than Crystal Palace – a remarkable stat! Obviously they need to improve their home form if they don’t want to fight to stay up, however for today we really like the Sheffield United lay at 2.68. It looks way too short against a side with the away record of Palace coming into this fixture.

BETDAQ BEST BET:
Lay Sheffield United at 2.68.

MATCH STATS

  • Sheffield United and Crystal Palace haven’t faced in the Premier League since the 1992-93 campaign – Palace won both matches without conceding a goal.
  • Crystal Palace haven’t faced Sheffield United since February 2011 in the Championship, winning 1-0 under Dougie Freedman with a goal from Darren Ambrose.
  • In the top-flight, Sheffield United have lost five of their last six matches against Crystal Palace (W0 D1 L5), though all games were between 1990 and 1993.
  • In their first match of the season, Sheffield United became the first team to exclusively use British and Irish players in a Premier League game since Norwich City in August 2012 against Fulham.
  • London teams have won only three of their 18 Premier League visits to Bramall Lane, with Sheffield United winning the last five such games in a row. QPR in January 1993, Crystal Palace in March 1993 and Chelsea in October 2006 are the only London sides to have triumphed at the ground.
  • Only Manchester City (24) have scored more away Premier League goals in 2019 so far than Crystal Palace (20).
  • Sheffield United have never won a Premier League game on a Sunday (P5 W0 D4 L1). They’re the only side to have played more than once on that day of the week without ever winning in the competition.
  • Crystal Palace have won just one of their last 10 Premier League games in August (D2 L7), beating promoted Fulham 2-0 on the opening weekend last season.
  • In his third Premier League appearance, Sheffield United striker Billy Sharp scored his first goal in the top-flight with his first shot against Bournemouth – the last Englishman to score with his first two shots in the Premier League was Marcus Rashford in February 2016.
  • Crystal Palace’s Wilfried Zaha has scored six goals in his last seven away Premier League games. Indeed, of players to score more than five goals in the Premier League last season, Zaha scored the highest percentage of them away from home (90% – 9/10).

CHELSEA V LEICESTER

4.30pm Chelsea were embarrassed by Manchester United on the opening weekend, and another loss would really set Frank Lampard on the back foot at the start of the season. He would have been pleased with the performance midweek in the Super Cup; however disappointed to lose out on penalties. Leicester managed to beat Chelsea in this fixture last season, but they failed to find the net on the opening weekend when hosting Wolves for a 0-0 draw. So early in the season, there are already so many talking points around Chelsea and how they would dearly love a win to steady the ship.

The match odds at the time of writing currently trade; Chelsea 1.75, Leicester 5.4 and the draw is 4.0. Despite shipping four goals against United last weekend, Chelsea good too big at 1.75 here. They may have had a tough summer and a tough start to the campaign; however look at their home form. They have only lost once in their last 22 home Premier League games; however ironically for today that came against Leicester! They have always performed well and been tough to beat here and we feel that the 1.75 is ten ticks too big here. Leicester are a good and solid side; but Chelsea have the class to beat them at 1.75 is worth backing.

BETDAQ BEST BET:
Chelsea to beat Leicester at 1.75.

MATCH STATS

  • Chelsea’s 0-1 home defeat to Leicester in the Premier League last season was only their second against the Foxes in 13 meetings in the competition (W7 D4 L2) and their first since September 2000.
  • Leicester are looking to win consecutive away league matches against Chelsea for the first
    time since October 1961.
  • Only one of the last 86 shots in Premier League games between Chelsea and Leicester has been converted – the one converted was scored by Leicester’s Jamie Vardy in a 1-0 win in December 2018.
  • Chelsea have won their opening home league match of the season in 14 of the last 16 seasons (W14 D1 L1), with their only defeat coming as reigning champions in 2017-18 against Burnley.
  • Chelsea have only lost one of their last 22 home league games (W13 D8), though that defeat did come against Leicester in December 2018.
  • Chelsea haven’t lost their first two games at the start of a top-flight season since the 1973-74 campaign, when they finished 17th under Dave Sexton.
  • This will be Leicester’s 500th Premier League game, the 16th different team to reach the milestone. Of the previous 15, only five have won their 500th game – Arsenal, Everton, Tottenham, Newcastle and most recently Manchester City (6-1 v Burnley in April 2010).
  • Leicester have failed to score in their last three Premier League games, with their last two finishing goalless. They last had three consecutive 0-0 draws in league competition back in March 1973.
  • Leicester manager Brendan Rodgers has only faced Aberdeen and Rangers more often during his managerial career (13 games) than Chelsea (12 games) – however, he is still yet to register a win over the Blues, drawing six and losing six of his meetings; he has only lost more often against Manchester United (eight defeats).
  • Since the start of 2014-15, Leicester forward Jamie Vardy has scored 12 away Premier League goals against the ‘big six’ – three more than any other player.
  • Following a 0-4 defeat against Man Utd in his first game, Frank Lampard is looking to avoid becoming only the second Chelsea manager to lose his first two Premier League games in charge, after Gianluca Vialli. Indeed, Vialli (Feb 1998) and Glenn Hoddle (Aug 1993) are the only Chelsea bosses to lose their first home Premier League match (excluding caretakers).
