COPPERHEAD CAN IMPROVE OVER PYM
You could be racing today. Or you may have to read a book. Pym (1.50) could be the early star of Ascot IF it survives Storm Dennis. Haydock seems more confident but Wincanton is already lost at sea, abandoned because of waterlogging.
Since Pym is by Stowaway, his name must refer not to the famous Parliamentarian of that name but to Edgar Allan Poe’s narrative of Arthur Gordon Pym, in which marooned sailors eat the cabin boy.
The book was written in 1838, presaging the actual event of 1884 when the starving crew of a yacht, the Mignonette, killed a cabin boy of the same name as in the book, after trying to survive for 10 days on a 1lb tin of turnips!
1.50 Ascot (Reynoldstown Novices Chase) There could be a turn-up, though no reason why they should eat these humble words about Pym: ‘He handles soft ground very well and just gets on with his work’ (Nicky Henderson).
Two wins each for Pym and Sam Brown have them both rated 152. Pym has been let down by the placed horses behind him at Ascot and Cheltenham: the only one to follow up won a class 4.
Sam Brown’s form is more convincing: the horse he hammered at Haydock recently had previously won two, including defeat of another dual winner since.
Copperhead steps up from handicaps, one of them the Mandarin at Newbury, another the Silver Buck at Wincanton, when he beat seasoned handicappers.
Deserves his Graded chasing chance and gets weight from Pym and from Sam Brown, who made mistakes the last day. I took 4.6 in the BETDAQ orange exchange.
LONG WALK BACK FOR WORLD’S END
2.05 Haydock (Rendlesham Hurdle) The World’s End, seventh in the 2018 Stayers’ Hurdle at Cheltenham, targets that race again in March after a short career chasing which matched his hurdles mark of 149.
But, back to hurdles in November after a break, he stepped up to win at Wetherby (Grade 2) before landing the Long Walk on heavy at Ascot (Grade 1) just before Christmas and is now rated 156, the highest he’s ever been.
In between, he led Paisley Park and Thistlecrack until the last, when seven-lengths third in the Ladbrokes Long Distance Hurdle at Newbury.
World’s End’s Grade-1 penalty lets in West Approach on level peggings but he’s another year older, has been chasing since last Spring and hasn’t shone over the smaller obstacles since a surprise second to Paisley Park in the Long Walk of 2018.
The grey Donna’s Diamond, older still, has also been chasing since he was the Rendlesham winner two years ago. The others have work to do.
ALWAYS A KACHY TUNE AT LINGFIELD
2.35 Lingfield AW Sprint Champion Kachy runs in his first handicap for nearly two years, trying to give lumps of weight away off 10st 2lb.
His Lingfield record since then is 11211 but all the rest have been conditions races. The last day he was 3rd of 17 in the Group-1 Diamond Jubilee at Royal Ascot.
That was around the time that Harrys Bar was winning his only start at Lingfield, a class-4 handicap. He’s rated 22lb higher now but has not played in Pattern company.
Mohareb is also a class-4 winner twice at Lingfield; one at 6f, one at 7f. Total Commitment belongs to the same grade and has the same (93) rating, handicapped to dead-heat with Lady Dancealot, who is getting more weight from Merhoob than when he beat her earlier on.
They all read like much of a muchness, and Kachy can surely leave them gasping.
FRENCH RAIDER ROCKADENN TEMPTING
2.40 Haydock (Victor Ludorum Juvenile Hurdle) French-trained Triumph Hurdle outsider, Rockadenn has won four in a row by the sea at Cagnes over the winter: three chases and a hurdle.
He hasn’t beaten much but, then again, Sir Psycho has been winning, and The Pink’Un been beaten, at lowly class-4 level.
Gerolamo Cardano has also won (on heavy) only at a lower level but seemed to step up quickly on that to finish third in the Triumph Trial at Cheltenham, disputing the lead until the last. But it has to be said that maidens were first and second, so Grade 2 it wasn’t.
Sir Psycho’s Exeter win was a 31-lengths stroll over a 15-lengths previous winner, and the fourth horse has scored since. He could see off the French raider but he’s very tempting at 4.9 in the BETDAQ orange.
MALAYA MIGHT SPRING 15.0 SURPRISE
3.00 Ascot This (nearly) 2m 4f handicap hurdle has gone to horses aged six or seven (7-8) in the last eight seasons.
It’s asking a bit much of the four-year-old, Nordano, who is living off his placed efforts (remote in all three races) behind Goshen and Allmankind but the trainer’s insistent ‘crying out for further and loves the mud’ means we can’t write him off with his light weight.
Eden Du Houx gave weight on the heavy ground but outgunned a 12-lengths Kelso winner at Chepstow.
The Con Man also won at Kelso, taking a class 2 from a 14-lengths Ayr scorer, while Newbury class-2 winner, Dorking Boy (BETDAQ 12.0), is back to his optimum trip.
Imperial Cup winner Malaya (BETDAQ 15.0) has had a break, and dropped a pound or two, since the autumn. Fourth in this race when won by her stable last year after being blocked in her run.
GRAND NATIONAL HORSES ON PARADE
2.25 Ascot and 2.54 Gowran Park Valtor and Ballyoptic, both at 41.0 for the Grand National in the BETDAQ Sportsbook, and Regal Encore at 50.0 all prep for Aintree in the 3m Ascot race.

3.35 Ascot Chase With the Ryanair as his target, Cyrname, one of our Fortune Cookies, who toppled Altior in November, but was beaten in the King George, is at least 13lb better than any of his rivals here on official ratings.
YALA ENKI CAN TAKE HAYDOCK TRIAL
3.15 Haydock (Grand National Trial) Today‘s field is listed in order of Aintree market preference in the BETDAQ Sportsbook (odds on the left), in case you want to grab an ante-post bet in advance of today’s result.
26.0 Elegant Escape Mudlover who was RSA third, Ladbrokes Trophy runner-up, then Coral Welsh Grand National winner in 2018; returned to Newbury for November’s renewal of the Ladbrokes Trophy, blinkered first time, and finished strongly, third giving lumps of weight to the first two. Has had wind op since the last day.
26.0 Yala Enki Fifth in this race on good ground last year but had won it on heavy the year before when rated 146. The bet today at 5.5 on BETDAQ, with success likely to reduce that 26.0.
Third in 2018 Coral Welsh Grand National, beaten five lengths giving 3lb to Elegant Escape. He’s 8lb better off today, despite a rise to 157 after third in the Chepstow marathon again in December.
34.0 One For Arthur The 2017 Aintree National winner, sixth last year, has had a wind op since fifth in the Becher Chase in December (Ballyoptic last of 11 finishers; Vintage Clouds pulled up.
