GOLD CUP HEROES: We thought it would be good fun to reminisce over some of our favourite Gold Cup horses.
We’ve had some wonderful moments down through the years in the Gold Cup, and we’ve picked out our favourite three to remember..
3️⃣ 2019. Winner: Al Boum Photo
This was a wonderful Gold Cup for many reasons. Native River was trying to defend his crown and what a brilliant display of jumping he gave. That jump when he was coming under more pressure at the top of the hill was a thing of beauty. Might Bite played his part along with Clan Des Obeaux and Bristol De Mai in a great race.
This was Willie Mullins first Gold Cup win after many seconds and what a way to do it. It meant a lot for Paul Townend too after those dramatic events in the Punchestown Gold Cup when Al Boum Photo was going to win but for some reason he pulled out of jumped a fence in the straight. An incredible comeback win! Afterwards, we all know he went out to win it again this year and he will get a chance for a famous three in a row next year.
2️⃣ 2015. Winner: Coneygree
It’s such a shame that Coneygree was never the same after winning this Gold Cup, because during it he looked like he had the world at his feet. Another sign of how much this great race takes out of horses and how hard it is to bounce back from. This was an incredible spectacle watching the way he jumped around as a Novice – the first Novice winner for 40 years!
Djakadam, Road To Riches, Many Clouds and Silviniaco Conti were all seasoned chasers who were battled hardened and had plenty of talent, and Coneygree just blew them away from the front with his incredible jumping. Perhaps we don’t give him as much credit as he deserves because of the way he went afterwards, but at the time – this was a special performance at the highest level possible.
1️⃣ 2011. Winner: Long Run
Finally, who could forget this magical Gold Cup? It’s hard to believe it’s ten Gold Cup’s ago now. The commentary from Richard Hoiles “Denman and Kauto Star rolling back the years..” as they turn into the straight will give most National Hunt fans goosebumps to this day.
Denman, Kauto Star and Long Run were legends of the National Hunt game and to see them all go down to the second last clear in the Gold Cup will live long in the memory. We will always look back on the past with rose tinted glasses but this was a special Gold Cup with special horses. What else is there to say apart from watch it and enjoy it again!
