HOW THE NEW RACING CALENDAR COULD PAN OUT: Daqman discusses ‘racing resumption Plan B’: where things could fall in the revised calendar, what it will mean for the Classics. ‘Plan B is better than Plan 9 From Outer Space,’ says Daqman, clearly admitting that he’s been going through his DVD collection in these times of isolation. 🗓️ Tomorrow: More Secrets of Winner-Finding

HERE’S THE DERBY JULY DATE

What have we missed? Recent Guineas winners Kingman, Frankel and Wince won yesterday’s lost Newbury trials, and next week’s abandoned Newmarket tests were goldmines with equally rare seams.

Derby winners Golden Horn, Intello and Masar were the highlights of the Craven meeting over two decades.

In fact, most racegoers and pro punters alike will feel the loss of Chester most of all, with its merry-go-round Cup circuit, and three-year-old tests which have produced Derby winners plus the fabulous Enable.

The current plan is to stage Classic trials late in May, with the English Guineas in early June and the Derby and Oaks in July. If there were a schedule like this – which seems to be the proposal – not too much would be lost:

Greenham Stakes (in the calendar for yesterday) ABANDONED (2019 Mohaather, 2014 Kingman, 2011 Frankel)
Fred Darling Stakes (yesterday) ABANDONED (2019 Dandhu, 1999 Wince)
Feilden Stakes (Tuesday) POSTPONED to end May (2019 Kick On, 2015 Golden Horn, 2013 Intello)
Nell Gwyn Stakes (Tuesday) POSTPONED to end May (2019 Qabala, 2006 Speciosa, 2002 Misterah)
Craven Stakes (Wednesday) POSTPONED to end May (2019 Skardu, 2018 Masar, 2004 Haafhd)
2,000 and 1,000 Guineas (May 2-3) POSTPONED to June 5-6/VENUE NOT YET KNOWN
Chester Vase (May 6) ABANDONED (Sir Dragonet 2019, Ruler Of The World 2013, Treasure Beach 2011)
Cheshire Oaks (May 6) ABANDONED (Mehdaayih 2019, Enable 2017, Light Shift 2007)
Lingfield Derby Trial (May 9) POSTPONED to May 16 or 23 (Anthony Van Dyck 2019, High-Rise 1998)
Lingfield Oaks Trial (May 9) POSTPONED to May 16 or 23 (Anapurna 2019, Midday 2009, Ramruma 1999)
Royal Ascot (June 16-19) DATE AND VENUE UNCHANGED/BEHIND CLOSED DOORS
Derby and Oaks (new dates July 10 and 11) VENUE NOT YET KNOWN

Horse Racing Ireland says that they are ‘racing ready’ whenever the lockdown is lifted, on or after May 4.

WHY BETDAQ 2.1 IS 2,000 VALUE

Pinatubo should be long odds-on. So says a pro-punter pal who is isolated with his form books but not missing any daily bread-and-butter bets.

‘Barney’ explains that ‘even if things were normal, this is not the time to bet; form doesn’t settle down until after the Derby, and that will be six weeks late this year.’ But he does have a value bet when he sees a ‘gap’.

In his case, Barney is an abbreviation of Barnacle Bill, a fictional comedy character who defied the rules and believed in a disciplined approach.

He says: ‘There’s not much chance of breaking the punter’s lore until they make their usual mistakes and latch on to the obvious. In this case, however, the obvious may well be right and it may be too big a price.’

Currently 2.1 in the BETDAQ Sportsbook for the 2,000 Guineas, Pinatubo is seen as value because ‘only one outstanding colt against him in the market, and he’s in the same Godolphin ownership. So he won’t run!’ says yer man.

Barney argues that Earthlight, the 8.0 second favourite, based for Godolphin with Andre Fabre in France, is unlikely to be allowed to travel.

‘In any event, Fabre usually needs to get a run into them and, unless French racing reopens soon, he won’t get any opportunities at home, except a cakewalk in a delayed French 2,000 (make me an offer of 2.1 someone?). The boys in blue are no bigger than 2.1 a Guineas double!

‘Even if things were normal, Earthlight would be trying to dodge Pinatubo, who could boss a small field in the English Guineas, Frankel like. You say 2.1? He’ll be nearer 1.2 when they line up.

‘If I’m wrong about the numbers, any quantity in the 2,000 field would be due to Derby horses desperate for a run at Classic level.’

PINATUBO (Godolphin, Charlie Appleby): form 111111 includes Chesham Stakes, National Stakes and Dewhurst. Official rating 1️⃣2️⃣8️⃣.

EARTHLIGHT (Godolphin, Andre Fabre): form 11111 includes Prix Morny and Middle Park Stakes. Notional rating 1️⃣2️⃣0️⃣.
