14-1 DAQMAN BULL’S-EYE HITS THE WIRE AFTER CRUSH FINISH: Daqman had the first four in his Irish 2,000 Guineas order-in but in the ‘wrong’ order (2-4-1-3) as a concertina in the final furlong ‘wiped out’ his bull’s-eye bet, Vatican City (2ND 14-1), whose late charge through the ‘wall’ couldn’t catch Siskin, who had already escaped the crush in the brilliant hands of Colin Keane. Earlier at Newbury, Daqman’s first double-value bet at 3-1 was 7-2 SP, taken at BETDAQ 6.0; perfect, except that he ran too fresh and didn’t get into it. The 1,000 Guineas day headlines:
🔹 WISDOM IS: GO FOR A CLASS HORSE
🔹 FRANKEL FILLY DOUBLE FOR DETTORI
🔹 10.5 BETDAQ FANCY TO BIG ALBIGNA
WISDOM IS: GO FOR A CLASS HORSE
⭕ 2.05 Sandown Ascension has not yet risen to this level from class-4 wins late last summer but gets weight from all seven of his rivals here and won’t mind softer ground.
Surf Dancer showed improvement in 2-2 last August and can be forgiven his failing to cope with the mud in the Horris Hill Stakes.
But, despite getting weight, both may struggle to contain a colt of the class displayed by Well Of Wisdom, second to Earthlight at Deauville and to Alson at Baden-Baden, and in form this year with success at Meydan in February. BETDAQ 5.0.
Impressor, third in the Horris Hill, was aided by cheekpieces that day; now he’s back after a wind op and with his stable in form. Rain helps.
⭕ 2.25 Newbury I took BETDAQ 14.0 front-runner Dancing Feet as a back and lay. An improver for a stable knocking in the winners.
Miss Celestial, already Listed placed four times, has scored at a lower level and then only on firm ground.
The grey Mubtasimah had a good second season and may have more to give but his stable is currently missing strike, with six favourites beaten to one success from seven in the last five days.
FRANKEL FILLY DOUBLE FOR DETTORI
⭕ 3.00 Newbury Another fillies’ Listed, this one with very little form to go on but we do know that John Gosden has won it three times in eight years, and that he has nailed more than 20 winners since the resumption.
He could already have had Tsar (12.15) which, with Frankel’s daughter, Franconia (BETDAQ 3.5), in this one, could make up a Frankie Dettori double.
Cabaletta’s defeat of another Frankel, Frankly Darling (also ridden by Dettori), last year does not allow for that one’s dramatic improvement this Spring or that John Gosden should know the score: he trains both Frankel fillies.
⭕ 3.35 Newbury (Diomed Stakes) Stalls 1 and 2 are 6-9 in this, but the rain has forced Marie’s Diamond in the one stall to bypass this to go straight to Royal Ascot.
Gosden’s King Of Comedy is Group-1 placed but is unreliable which is probably why his dual winning jockey of last Spring, Frankie Dettori, is not staying around for the ride.
Last year’s winner, Zaaki, has also been best on firm ground so far, and I shall surmise that this has long time been the target of Century Dream, who won the race in 2018 when he was third in the Champions Mile.
He led until the closing stages in the Deauville AW Championships over 9.5 furlongs and not beaten until 50 yards out. Back and lay at 11.0 on BETDAQ this morning.
10.5 BETDAQ FANCY TO BIG ALBIGNA
⭕ 7.15 The Curragh (1,000 Guineas) Aidan O’Brien has won this eight times, with Winter (2017), a Fortune Cookie and one of my big hitters. I was also on the record-breaking Hermosa last year; otherwise it’s not my greatest race.
Seamie Heffernan has won it three times, and Jessica Harrington was on this Guineas scoreboard recently with Alpha Centauri (2018). My order-in with official ratings:
1️⃣ Albigna (114) Every drop of rain that falls is pennies from heaven for Jessica Harrington and Albigna, granddaughter of mudloving Selkirk. Indeed, she drew clear in the Marcel Boussac (Pouliches) at the Arc meeting run on heavy.
So Wonderful (3rd), Soul Search (4th) and Albigna (6th) had earlier been up to two lengths or so behind Love in the Moyglare, and there’s no denying Albigna can have an off day.
She is drawn wide tonight but takes time to warm up anyway, and is quirky about the company she keeps, so doesn’t really want to be behind the wall we saw stop Vatican City yesterday. Fortune Cookie at BETDAQ 2.97.
2️⃣ Fancy Blue (102) This one would hit the headlines, as first big winner for Donnacha O’Brien as a trainer. She needs a good pace for her stamina to kick in.
Unbeaten (2-2) daughter of a sister to High Chaparral, she’s already won on the course; she’s already won over the distance. She’s all ready, says Donnacha! BETDAQ 10.5
3️⃣ New York Girl (103) A New Approach out of a Giant’s Causeway mare, she impressed on heavy in the Weld Park Stakes but the second filly home had earlier been 12 lengths behind Albigna.
Trainer Joseph O’Brien hit form here yesterday, including with Crossfirehurricane, who found a devastating burst to land the Gallinule. BETDAQ 18.0.
4️⃣ Peaceful (100) Seemingly Seamie Heffernan’s pick of the two Aidan O’Brien runners, with Wayne Lordan on So Wonderful.
A Galileo filly, Peaceful ran second at Newmarket on heavy in the autumn to Born With Pride, who disappointed in a Group 3 earlier this month, with recent Listed winner Run Wild in third. Fourth, fifth and sixth have failed since. BETDAQ 4.4.
5️⃣ Roca Roma Support during the week for this stablemate of Siskin, who ‘could be anything’ at this stage. BETDAQ 12.5.
6️⃣ So Wonderful (108) put up an improved performance in the Moyglare, her last run of eight in a juvenile career in which she failed to score.
She closed down on Love by almost three lengths between the Silver Flash in July and that final effort in the Moyglare in September (both 7f), but it would be extraordinary for any horse eight times placed without winning to take a Classic. BETDAQ 10.0.
7️⃣ Ridenza Mick Halford’s runners are not finishing well right now but this filly has a future, if recovered from a fractured pastern. BETDAQ 18.5.
8️⃣ Soul Search (106) Fourth in the Moyglare after leading from two out but fading to late challengers. Another with a place-only record after five races. BETDAQ 36.0.
