👑 KING GEORGE COUNTDOWN: Daqman sets the scene today, and will bring you news and an ABC guide in daily coverage this week.

KING GEORGE COUNTDOWN: DAY 1

⭕ 3.35 Ascot, Saturday (King George V1 and Queen Elizabeth Stakes) Daqman followers have scored with Harbinger (4-1), Nathaniel (11-2 nap) and Enable (5-4 nap) in the last nine years of the King George.

But to find a good-priced winner this year will mean opposing Enable, likely to start narrowly odds on. She has won it two years in the last three.

Opponents when declarations are made today are expected to be Epsom Derby winner, third and fourth of 2019, Anthony Van Dyck, Japan and Broome, all trained Aidan O’Brien.

Previous successful Derby winners in the race include Tulyar, Pinza, Nijinsky, Mill Reef, Grundy, The Minstrel, Troy, Shergar and Generous.

But the most important winners of any generation were Ribot, as one of the horses to open up European competition in the Fifties; Galileo, as one of the most successful stallions of all time; and Ballymoss, as the beginning of the long reign of Classic domination by Ireland’s O’Brien. Not Aidan but Vincent. Aidan comes 43 years on, between Ballymoss and Galileo.

But Galileo’s grandsire, Northern Dancer, had Nearco as his grandsire, as had Ballymoss. Even if the O’Briens are not related, the bloodlines they serve are one and the same.

Nearco was bred in Italy (1957) and was known as the godfather of thoroughbreds. Northern Dancer was bred in Canada (1961) and his children included Nijinsky and Sadler’s Wells, both with Vincent O’Brien. Galileo (Aidan O’Brien), by Sadlers Wells, is the father of Frankel and Nathaniel.

COUP FOR NICHOLLS ON THE CARDS

⭕ 1.40 Market Rasen Not a bad jumps card to start the week at Market Rasen and in this class 3 handicap chase El Presente and Coup De Pinceau dominate the market and are both representing stables that have started the season well.

BETDAQ market leader is El Presente for Kim Bailey (2 wins from last 8). He’s not a horse I would automatically look to back at a short price. He remains 0-3 over fences with his only career success coming over hurdles at Huntingdon. Furthermore, he was was pulled up in heavy ground when last seen out and will unquestionably appreciate today’s quicker surface more.

But the Paul Nicholls trained Coup De Pinceau is a serious rival. The stable are on a 5-17 strike-rate and Coup De Pinceau can be excused his latest defeat which came at the Cheltenham Festival when pulled up in the Kim Muir back in March.

He is better judged on his previous Wincanton third and is another who will be suited by the better ground. He is taken to get the better of the favourite.

JIMMY PRESCRIBED FOR THE GOOD DOCTOR

⭕ 2.10 Market Rasen Dr Richard Newland is another trainer in good form (4 winners from last 22) and he can boost those stats further with Jimmy Rabbitte here.

The seven-year-old has the benefit of a recent outing and shaped well enough after a 294 day break to finish fifth at Uttoxeter.

More is needed, but it’s likely he can find it (hopefully the first time cheekpieces will be a positive) to see off what doesn’t appear to be the strongest set of rivals.

Lungarno Prince is falling down the weights but hasn’t won a race since 2018 whilst Craigmor has questions to answer after a 409 day absence and a disappointing effort when favourite here over a year ago.

SUMMA LOOKS TOO HOT

⭕ 2.50 Ayr It should prove third time lucky for Summa Peto who is arguably unlucky still to be in maiden company.

He has only been beaten by narrow margins in both his starts here and gave long odds-on backers a mighty scare last time out when running the 2/9 fav March Law to a short head in a match race. It’s dangerous to read too much into the form of a match but the winner had previously finished second to Aidan O’Brien’s Battleground in the Chesham Stakes so it’s fair to assume we are talking well above average form.

Mark Johnston trains March Law and also handles chief rival Chase The Dollar here who went off 2/5 favourite on debut at Musselburgh but was no match for Ventura Mutiny. The Johnston runner needs to improve a lot and Summa Peto should be more streetwise.
