NATIONAL BULL’S EYE PUTS DAQMAN 39-24 UP ON PRICEWISE: Life was a cabaret for Daqman followers yesterday! He landed a 50-point bull’s-eye bet, when Paul Townend enterprisingly made all in the Kerry National on Cabaret Queen (WON 6-1). He leads Pricewise for winners 39-24, with 72.61 profit to his archrival’s losses of 109.84, a difference of more than 182 points.

NEWMARKET CAMBRIDGESHIRE MEETING IS ON ITV TODAY: Daqman promised to tilt at three big races at Listowel. He’s had a winner at 6-1 and a second at 9-1. The third feature race, the Ladbrokes Hurdle, is tomorrow. Meanwhile, he launches the Newmarket Cambridgeshire meeting today, having already put one up for the big race at 20-1. Newmarket and Pontefract are on ITV.
LAST CAN BE FIRST FOR FRANKIE
⭕ 1.50 Newmarket Frankie Dettori is at Newmarket for just the one ride today, Last Sunset, who was caught in the final strides at Ascot on soft ground, giving 6lb to the winner. The third horse home won easily the last day.
Last Sunset is by Teofilo, who has a 35% win record for progeny running on good-to-firm, and her main danger, the grey colt Lost In Space, is the one who has to concede 6lb this time.
Runners-up to Lost In Space, at Lingfield and on the July Course, have won since, but both when dropped to class 4.
Olympic Theatre’s York fourth (7f) was in a strong race and this step up to a mile could help the gelding.
⭕ 2.05 Pontefract Highwaygrey’s Pontefract form figures this year are 1111 (over CD) but he’s 20lb higher since that all started in June after a long break, and is up in grade today.
Nevertheless, this is an amazing record for a horse so reluctant in the stalls (reared up and tried to climb out on one occasion); maybe he just wants to get on with it.
How it can all go wrong is exemplified in Arctic Sound. Form 11011 in 2018, culminating in the Somerville Tattersall Stakes on today’s Newmarket card. In 10 consecutive defeats since then, he has three times finished second, suggesting a revival which never really happened.
His good third at Ayr the last day must have come as a surprise, as he started 66-1 in that and in the previous start at Kempton, after being gelded.
His stablemate, Dontaskmeagain, injured in a hat-trick bid last October, should be watched in the market for signs that he is ‘expected’ on this return after almost a year off.
Victory Chime, who won three out of four on summer ground at the London tracks last year, could not dominate on a trip to Pontefract last June but should make sure it is an honest race.
TROTTER’S LOVELY JUBBLY ON ICE
⭕ 2.25 Newmarket David O’Meara had four out of five at Redcar and Goodwood yesterday. Now, in his plans for the rest of the week, sends only Betsey Trotter down to Newmarket, with Harry Bentley there for one ride.
Betsey (4.8 in the BETDAQ orange as I write) landed a hat-trick on summer ground last year but has won off today’s 86 on AW since, and was back to form at Thirsk the last day.
Quickstep Lady drops back a furlong for her handicap debut after an easy win at Goodwood (7f) on the soft, and probably needs rain to get into the ground.
Gale Force Maya is a lone raider from County Durham who stepped up in grade from a low-level hat-trick last autumn but has struggled with the bridesmaid label (22322 form figures).
One of her seconds was in this race last year (Lady of Aran 10th), caught close home by a stablemate of Quickstep Lady. Michael Dods seems to think she’s stronger now.
Flippa The Strippa had to be dropped to class 4 to get into the frame, beaten half a length at Lingfield.
⭕ 2.40 Pontefract Dark Jedi, who did his winning over nine and 10 furlongs in the summer (fourth in the John Smiths Cup) is up in the weights but still unexposed at 12 and 14 furlongs, after two good runs, including second in the Old Borough Cup at Haydock.
Amazing Red has won only once in more than two years now, Not So Sleepy not on the Flat for more than three years; his more recent success has come in the mud over hurdles.
Frankel’s Storm has been disappointing the last twice, since making all on this course last month. Maybe Pontefract will wake him up again, and he’ll help stablemate West End Girl’s mental struggles since scoring on the July Course 13 months back.
BERGER HAT-TRICK ONLY DELAYED
⭕ 3.00 Newmarket A Group 3 for juveniles won in the last three years by Elarqam and Wichita. Not so strong a race today.
Charlie Appleby currently has a 5-9 strike rate, and La Barrosa was impressive on the eye at Ascot, but the time was slow and a winner since from the placed horses was scoring in class 5.
Yazaman has become a bridesmaid over shorter (form 22202), and swapped around visor for blinkers.
If this race followed on Qaader’s second in the Coventry, he would be red hot here, but he’s down a grade after fourth and fifth in July Stakes and Richmond Stakes.
Ventura Tormenta won the Robert Papin on soft Chantilly ground (5lb penalty) but jockey Pat Dobbs says he needs the fast ground that earlier won him a novice event at York.
Dark Lion was fourth in the Coventry, behind Qaader, and fourth at Doncaster, behind Yazaman.
⭕ 3.35 Newmarket Last year’s winner, the front-runner Withhold, looks poised for another good run after his second at Salisbury the last day (Ranch Hand behind).
Mildenberger built up a hat-trick bid with an AW double before the lockdown, then only just failed to catch stablemate Nayef Road when returning in June.
Nayef Road has since been second to Stradivarius in the Goodwood Cup and finished in front of Withhold in the Lonsdale Cup at York.
⭕ 6.30 Kempton Crown Power’s sire and dam’s sire both won first time on a racecourse, and James Fanshawe will want this, his first runner for King Power. I took BETDAQ 5.7.
