PURPLE PATCH: The sport of Tennis has been looking for it’s next superstar and it may have found it with in-form Russian Daniil Medvedev, who’s recent Purple Patch has seen him defeat the world’s best.
How the Russian has ended 2020 on a high
Although Daniil Medvedev reached the semi-finals of the US Open this year, before the start of this month, the Russian wouldn’t have looked back on 2020 too favourably.
His season had been blighted by a number of early exits, meaning he had failed to make a final in any of the 10 tournaments he’d competed in.
However, November has seemed to have brought out a new lease of life in the world number four and he’s gone on an imperious run.
This Purple Patch has seen him emerge victorious in his last 10 matches, resulting in two tournament wins in the Masters 1000 event in Paris and at last week’s season-ending ATP Tour Finals in London.
He’s had his serve broken just nine times in those wins and perhaps even more impressively is the calibre of player he’s beaten along the way.
Medvedev beat world number seven Alexander Zverev in the final in Paris, having lost the opening set, and then in London he got the better of the top eight players in the world this year.
As well as beating Zverev again and Diego Schwartzman, he took the scalps of Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal and in the final, Dominic Thiem – the three highest ranked players in the world rankings.
In doing so, the 24-year-old became the first man in history to beat the world’s top three in the ATP Tour’s season-ending tournament.
This fantastic run has also seen the Russian take home £1.3million in prize money and he looks sure to be a major force in the tennis world in 2021.
