BIG BASH: Our cricket tipster The Edge previews Wednesday’s Big Bash game between Perth Scorchers v Sydney Sixers with a recommended BETDAQ bet.
MATCH OVERVIEW:
We’re back in Perth Stadium on Wednesday morning as the Perth Scorchers host Sydney Sixers! This is a massive game for the Scorchers as they become a little detached at the bottom of the table, only Melbourne Renegades sit below them and they have been very poor. The Scorchers are 12 points behind the Sixers who lead the table, and they are becoming increasingly adrift from the playoff places. That’s a surprise given they were one of the favourites coming into the tournament.
The Scorchers did produce an impressive win in their first home game of the season here on Sunday, but that was only against the Renegades who have been woeful. They would have been pleased with their batting though as they put up 185/3. The question has to be asked however; was that because of the poor Renegades bowling or the Scorchers talent. Probably a bit of both, but Jason Roy will help at the top of the order.
The Sixers haven’t done anything flashy so far, but they have been rock solid. Their bowling looks pretty strong and when you have a strong bowling unit you tend to do very well in these franchise tournaments. They have pulled some games out of the fire however so while they are top of the table, I wouldn’t say it’s because they have been totally dominant in their games.
WEATHER AND PITCH WATCH:
We had the first game here on Sunday and Perth scored 185/3 in the first innings but then the Renegades were bowled out for 89 in the second innings. It’s hard to read too much into that, but I’d expect reasonably good batting conditions. Last season we had good scores here with the average score batting first 169. That included a 86 all out too. I would expect another score over 180 looking at the scores last season. And don’t fully rule out a 200+ as we saw 213/3 and 196/7 here last season. It seemed to be an advantage to bat first last season too, so I’d win the toss and bat!
RECOMMENDED BET:
A fascinating market here on BETDAQ Betting Exchange. Perth Scorchers are favourites at 1.83 despite the Sydney Sixers being top of the table and 12 points ahead. In fairness, I can understand it as the Perth side looks very strong on paper. We felt that at the start of the season though and it just hasn’t worked out for them. Obviously Jason Roy at the top of the order will help and he should enjoy this stadium too but I just can’t have the odds here. The Sixers might not be a hugely impressive side, but they know how the win games and their bowling can be the difference in good batting conditions too.

IN-RUNNING STRATEGY:
I know I said above that I do like the Sydney Sixers before the match starts, however from a trading point of view I feel the team who bats first will win the game. Batting conditions looked good here on Sunday, and the scores from last year suggest we’ll have a very good wicket. It’s a lot easier to set 190 than chase it, and that’s reflected in the stats here too. I’d be very keen to support the team batting first. I feel both sides have their positive points for batting first – for Perth Roy is there and the Sixers have been good with the bat, and bat all the way down.
Looking for a trade on the team batting first will be my main angle, and my next would be getting against the Perth middle order. I’d be happy to be against them even if they bat first, as that trade is relies on the top order scoring the runs at a decent rate. The Sixers bowling is good, and they can go well against the middle order. The ideal game from a trading point of view is the Sixers to bat first, go well and then we can get against the Perth middle order chasing under pressure.
