JONATHAN HOBBS: Hats off to Newcastle for an excellent card tonight – 12 open races at the Arc track live on TRP and RPGTV, top quality ones at that.

One of the best races of the night is the Arc Puppy Standard Trophy, the fifth race on the card.

It features classy littermates Cold As Ice and Ice Of Diamonds for Jimmy Fenwick against Ted Soppitt’s strong-running and well-drawn Burnchurch Mick. The latter could rate the value here.

However let’s look at potentially the best picks at Newcastle tonight.

Newcastle

6.19: A cracking puppy contest kicks off proceedings at the north east venue, where Little Venture might be tough to hold. Tom Heilbron’s runner had no luck in the Towcester fog during the Puppy Derby, but a decent sprint trial suggests he’s in good heart.

Play: Little Venture

6.51: Another young and improving sort could pay to follow here. Bramble Oliverj first came to prominence during the Romford Puppy Cup and boasts superb early dash when things fall into place. A good run on his return latest paves the way for Jimmy Fenwick’s dog here?

Play: Bramble Oliverj

7.09: The first of three good sprint contests and this division could be at the mercy of Acomb Fatima if she comes away. A solid Sheffield victory recently caught the eye, although a first Newcastle start requires that snappy exit to strike gold for Kevin Ferguson.

Play: Acomb Fatima

7.58: Another solid two-bend event now and Coal Butler could get back on the winning trail. Brian Stuart’s dog has a 7-from-19 strike-rate and boasts winning C&D form – plus comeback trials have been decent enough. Take the strong Pinpoint Reef for the forecast.

Play: Coal Butler

8.12: A trappy event now with some solid C&D form to go on. However, while a local, Ardralla Jim’s most recent form has been away from home and his early dash has set up some good efforts. Could he escape here for the Tom Heilbron kennel?

Play: Ardralla Jim

8.27: The top division of the sprint sees old rivals Coolavanny Dylan and Geelo Brezza do battle again and both are always players – perhaps the best start will again come from Dylan? Respect is also due, however, to well-drawn Sams Elle and top-class Droopys Carat.

Play: Coolavanny Dylan

8.46: A maiden stayers event next and an intriguing affair. Geelo Demi has always been well regarded by Carl Perry and, with a record of 4 wins from 7 starts, knows where the winning line is. Her Sheffield performances make this step up in distance more than interesting.

Play: Geelo Demi

9.01: Lightfoot Ripley could help complete a decent night for Jimmy Fenwick’s team if things fall into place early. This lightly raced sort ran a fast trial, has strong leadability claims and could get first run on the talented Droopys Dazzler. Doonanes Trick is a big danger to all as drawn.

Play: Lightfoot Ripley

9.12: The Newcastle finale now and Angela Harrison’s Coolavanny Bani is a classy sort and showed superb all-round speed to win an A1 on New Year’s Day. A 28.59sec then from off the pace stands out, although keeping tabs with Acomb Jenny is definitely key. She’s a nice bitch.

Play: Coolavanny Bani

Good luck all.
